Among India-born women, I think it's worth mentioning Laxmi Poruri, born in Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), who reached as high as 110 in the singles rankings and 85 in the doubles rankings. Of course, she famously won the Orange Bowl beating Monica Seles in the final, and played in the second round of the US Open at the age of 15.

Congrats to Prajnesh for making the top-10 list. Maybe we should add the year when they reached the highest rankings?

We had 9 top-150 players till 1988 when Zeeshan made the top-150, and 10 when LP got there in 1994. Then we went 19 years without anybody, till Somdev in 2013. Now we have had 5 players make the top-150 in the last 6 years. Nice to see that.

Time for us to put a similar listing together for the women who have been ranked in the WTA top-300 (albeit still a rather short list):

Sania Mirza - 27
* Shikha Uberoi - 122
* Sunitha Rao -144
Nirupama Vaidyanathan - 147
Ankita Raina - 164
Kamran Kaur Thandi - 196
Pranjala Yadlapalli - 280

Isha Lakhani - 291

Manisha Malhotra and Ankita Bhambri narrowly failed to make it to the top-300. Shikha and Sunitha were not really products of the Indian system (and hence warrant their asterisks), but Shikha represented India throughout, and Sunitha reached her career-high when she was representing India.

It's sad how short this list is, though. We should be doing better than this. I certainly expected a couple more to be in the list by now, considering that it is about 15 years since the Sania phenomenon happened. Sadly, our kids were more bothered about who she was dating and marrying than what she was doing in tennis.

When PT Usha’s success has (arguably) not been matched to date, not replicating Sania’s success in a more expensive sport is hardly surprising.
