Nirupama Vaidyanathan - 147

Isha Lakhani - 291

Manisha Malhotra and Ankita Bhambri narrowly failed to make it to the top-300. Shikha and Sunitha were not really products of the Indian system (and hence warrant their asterisks), but Shikha represented India throughout, and Sunitha reached her career-high when she was representing India.
Even closer than Manisha (314) and Ankita (332) were Rushmi Chakravarthi (310) and Poojashree Venketesh (306)- see the list which I had compiled last year on the previous page of this thread.

It's sad how short this list is, though. We should be doing better than this. I certainly expected a couple more to be in the list by now, considering that it is about 15 years since the Sania phenomenon happened. Sadly, our kids were more bothered about who she was dating and marrying than what she was doing in tennis.
True, but it's also heartening that of the 8 Indians on that list (6 Indian citizens while they were playing), 3 are currently active in the pro circuit, all with prospects of going higher.

Sumit Nagal becomes the 19th Indian to make it to the top-200 in the ATP singles rankings. He is 194 in the live rankings now, but I won’t update the table until he’s done at the ATP500 in Hamburg, where he plays former world #7 Richard Gasquet in R1 of the main draw -- after a couple of excellent victories over top-150 ranked players in the two rounds of qualifying.

Jeevan Neduncheziyan - 293

The reason I have moved Ramanathan Krishnan to the top is because the ATP page too mentions that he was in the top-10 of Lance Tingay's world rankings (admittedly only among the non-professionals) for 4 consecutive years. His highest ranking in that list was #6 in 1961. He was the fourth seed at Wimbledon in 1962 as a result. Lance Tingay's rankings were the closest thing to an official world ranking at the time. Jaideep Mukherjea similarly would probably be in the top-20 in 1962 (when he made the last-16 at both the US and Australian championships) and 1966 (when he did it again at the French championship and Wimbledon). But Tingay didn't put him in his top-10 or top-15, so the best we can do for him is use his ATP rankings -- admittedly when he was past his prime.

On the women's side, the list is unchanged from 2.5 years ago, but small changes to 2 of the career-high rankings:

Sania Mirza - 27
* Shikha Uberoi - 122
* Sunitha Rao -144
Nirupama Vaidyanathan - 147
Ankita Raina - 160
Kamran Kaur Thandi - 196
Pranjala Yadlapalli - 265

Isha Lakhani - 291

Slight change in the top of the pecking order, after ATP properly counted Sashi Menon's 1975 performances, and showed his career-high as being 71 (not 87 as we previously thought):

Ramanathan Krishnan - 6
Vijay Amritraj - 16
Ramesh Krishnan - 23
Somdev Devvarman - 62
Sashi Menon - 71
Leander Paes- 73
Anand Amritraj - 74
Prajnesh Gunneswaran - 75
Yuki Bhambri - 83
Jasjit Singh - 89
Premjit Lall - 105
Ramkumar Ramanathan - 111
Jaidip Mukherjea - 120
Sumit Nagal - 122
Zeeshan Ali - 126
Saketh Myneni -138
Prakash Amritraj - 154
Akshai Misra - 158
Srinivas Vasudevan – 166
Bhanu Nunna - 199
Ashok Amritraj - 201
Joykumar Royappa - 207
Rohan Bopanna - 213
Mahesh Bhupathi - 217
Chiradeep Mukherjea - 221
Harsh Mankad – 222
Sasi Kumar Mukund - 233
Vishnu Vardhan -262
Sanam Singh - 266
Karan Rastogi – 284
N. Sriram Balaji - 287
Jeevan Neduncheziyan - 293

ATP site has updated Sashi Menon's highest ranking to 71 and Vijay's to 18. So those need to be corrected. Also another interesting thing I found is that Krishnan's top ranking of 6 is taken from Lance Tingay's annually published rankings. This was in 1961. This was.among amateurs. The same year he had published a common ranking of amateurs and professionals where Krishnan was ranked 17th.

These are good sources.

A new Indian has entered the top-100 of singles after quite a long time. Sumit Nagal, after winning the Chennai Challenger 100 title without dropping a set, immediately after qualifying into the Aus Open main draw and beating a seed in R1, has cracked the ATP top-100 at last! So here is the new list:

Ramanathan Krishnan - 6
Vijay Amritraj - 16
Ramesh Krishnan - 23
Somdev Devvarman - 62
Sashi Menon - 71
Leander Paes- 73
Anand Amritraj - 74
Prajnesh Gunneswaran - 75
Yuki Bhambri - 83
Jasjit Singh - 89
Sumit Nagal - 98
Premjit Lall - 105
Ramkumar Ramanathan - 111
Jaidip Mukherjea - 120
Zeeshan Ali - 126
Saketh Myneni -138
Prakash Amritraj - 154
Akshai Misra - 158
Srinivas Vasudevan – 166
Bhanu Nunna - 199
Ashok Amritraj - 201
Joykumar Royappa - 207
Rohan Bopanna - 213
Mahesh Bhupathi - 217
Chiradeep Mukherjea - 221
Harsh Mankad – 222
Sasi Kumar Mukund - 233
Vishnu Vardhan -262
Sanam Singh - 266
Karan Rastogi – 284
N. Sriram Balaji - 287
Jeevan Neduncheziyan - 293

I think it's appropriate to stop considering Prajnesh (until and unless he does make a return), Yuki, Balaji, etc. as active singles players. So the only three in bold (to indicate current singles pros) are Sumit, RamK and Mukund.

Yes, Yuki and Balaji are certainly not returning to singles and we do not know if Prajnesh will get back. And even if he does it will be very tough for him to break back into top 100 as he is already past 33.

Time is also running out for RamK and Mukund to break their previous career highs of 111 and 233 respectively.

Hope Sumit can get ahead of Yuki, Prajnesj, Anand and Leander and hopefully past his current coach Somdev.
