Junior ITF grade-3 Kolkata (Jan 20) List.

Post by jayakris »

VERY disappointing lists, with a lot of talented Indian kids staying away. Two of them, Karan and Somdev, will be playing the Delhi juniors the week after this (and Chandigarh the following week). They will be at the Australian Open juniors the Kolkata week. Much better foriegn participation, though lower ranked players, this time.

Some of these players would be at the Dhaka and Rajshahi grade-3 events in the next two weeks before this one, I assume.

Basically Sania and Isha are the only two Indian junior players who should skip these grade-3 events due to lower competition.

Sorry to see Ankita Bhambri not in the list. Not that she needs this competition, but she needs some easy points and a higher rank to play higher-grade events. She could win two or three of these grade-3 events easily and then make the draw at some grade-A and grand slam junior draws. I think she should play those. She will hardly get enough top-class talented players in the satellites, in my view. Oh well .. it's just my view, after all :frown:

Also, where is Kartiki? Where is Tushar Liberhan?

Junior ITF grade-3 Kolkata (Jan 20) List.

I am upset that some of the promising Indian juniors are not at these events and I agree that some of the other young Indian players need to play at these events.
1) Match practice against reasonable quality opponents. Maybe not great opposition but still better than what they would see in the nationals or regionals held by the AITA.
2) Helps them get valuable points in the ITF rankings which allows them to get into the higher grade A, 1 and 2 type tourneys.

Maybe one of the reasons some of them do not show up is monetary. I think that ITF junior events have no prize money. Maybe for this reason some of the younger players stay away. But I think this is self-defeating as if you don't get exposure and play tourneys locally (Indian) which are cheaper than than the ones abroad it becomes more difficult to get sponsorships etc etc. But then I don't profess to know much about the systems in place in India.

Players like Ankita should be showing up for these events and getting points. They don't show up for these tourney's and then complain that other players (who they might have beaten but are higher ranked as they played all these matches) get preferential treatment from the AITA. I'm not saying Ankita does that but I know in India people have done such things.

Anyhow, Best of luck to all the players who have shown up who the tournament.
