India F2 (Jan 13) Delhi futures entry list/Results

Post by jayakris »

Here it is for the second week, India F2.

Full group of players will be there, but the foreign entries are tough. This will be tough. A cut of 600 for an Indian futures? -- Looks what adding hospitailty does? .. This will be the toughest futures in India ever, if everybody shows up.

People like Ajay will have to qualify if everyone shows up. Now people will get to see what a real futures event should be like. Don't know if I should be happy that the level of competition and the games will be so much better or sad that the Indian contingent will have a hard time doing well. :-?

In the main draw the Indians and their first round matchups are. Not the kindest of draws again for Harsh

Code: Select all

5 Rohan Bopanna (IND,387) vs WC Vishal Uppal (IND,719)
Harsh Mankad (IND,560) vs Sergei Pozdnev (RUS,652)
Mustafa Ghouse (IND,536) vs 7 Todor Enev (BUL,489)
Vijay Kannan (IND,581) vs 4 Satoshi Iwabuchi (JPN,385)
Sunil Kumar (IND,567) vs 8 Suwandi Suwandi (INA,493)
Vinod Sridhar (IND,651) vs Q Frederic Jeanclaude (FRA,1331)
WC Manoj Mahadevan(IND,680) vs Q Alexei Ageev (RUS,965)
WC Ashutosh Singh(IND,1331) vs 2 Dimitri Vlasov (RUS,305)
    Ajay Ramaswami(IND,645) vs Q Pavel Lobanov (RUS,818)
  Q Parantap Chaturvedi(IND) vs Q Vadim Davletshin (RUS,1184)
Harsh Mankad like always gets a great draw with a possible second round matchup against the top-seeded Mikael Elgin of Russia.

Mustafa's run of good draws comes to an end with a matchup against the winner of the Lucknow event in Todor Enev.

Nice win for Sunil Kumar over the experienced Indonesian Davis Cupper Suwandi. Perhaps he is back for good, and ready to make a move up the rankings....fingers firmly crossed

2. Dmitri Vlasov(RUS,305) d. WC Vinod Sridhar(IND,651)             6-1 6-4
In the quarterfinals Harsh will play last weeks' winner Todor Enev in a rematch of last weeks semis. Also, the 3players who we assumed are the 3 best best current hopes of Indian male tennis advanced to the quarters.

Sunil now runs into 2nd seeded Dimitri Vlasov(RUS,305) and I am going to assume that Iwabuchi will beat Lobanov and set a meeting with Rohan. In this case, these will again be good tests for the Indian players and hoepfully they win some of these matches.

So far the ATP points accumulated are :
Rohan-3 (all this week, didn't play last week)
Harsh -7 (4 last week , 3 this week)
Sunil - 3 (all this week, didn't play last week)

I agree.

Yes, there have been been good wins by some of the Indian players at Delhi but nothing earth-shattering so far. If all three make it to the semis then we will have something to cheer about. Rohan should make atleast the semis. Though al three will likely have tough matches tommorow unlike what they might have been used to at this stage at futures in India. Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but I think Mustafa's high ranking is a direct result of having played in a bunch of weakened tournaments and he is , atleast in rankings, the second best Indian male tennis player.

Actually, among the Indian players the upset-score is 1-1. We have
upset one and one of ours has been upset once. So this has been an
at-par performance this far.

Singles QF's

Code: Select all

   Harsh Mankad(IND,560)      d. 7. Todor Enev(BUL,489) 6-4 6-2
5. Rohan Bopanna(IND,387) d. Q. Pavel Lobanov(RUS,818)        6-3 6-3
Q. Vadim Davletshin(RUS,1184) d. Q. Naim Lalji(GBR) 6-2 6-2
2. Dmitri Vlasov(RUS,305) d.    Sunil Kumar Sipaeya(IND,567)  7-6(5) 6-3
Doubles SF's

Code: Select all

1. M.Elgin/D.Vlasov(RUS) vs H.Mankad/A.Ramaswami(IND)
   M.Ghouse/V.Punna(IND) vs Dong-Hyun Kim/N.Kirtane(KOR/IND)
Lobanov seems to be playing really well too. He beat Ajay Ramaswami quite easily and then disposed of the 3rd seed Iwabuchi as well (reversing the Lucknow loss). This is a sort of match that Rohan needs to win to get to the next level(consistency).

The Harsh/Todor match should be another good one if it is anything like the Lucknow semi. Hopefully Harsh can come up with the win this time around.

In the bottom half of the draw, if Sunil manages to beat the 2nd seed, he will face a qualifier in the semi's and will have a good opportunity to make the final. It is about time that we get something to cheer about and if 3 Indians make the semis, Indian tennis will have taken one step albeit a tiny one to a little more promising times. 8-)

Good progress for our top 3

Post by PKBasu »

It's good to see our top three players staying alive through the QF stage, but at least one of them should make the final (and preferably take the title). All three, I think, are capable of being firmly in the top-300, but must now start making a systematic switch to the next level (Challengers). It is interesting to note that Japan has many singles players rated well ahead of our top trio. The Delhi Davis Cup fixture will be a tough one, although not if our occasional pro-singles player and permanent Davis Cup hero (LP) is on song...!

The other, more interesting development is the clear emergence of the former US college rivals, Ajay and Harsh, as an increasingly stable and formidable doubles combination. Rohan ought to settle down with a better partner such as Sunil, and then this foursome can begin to tour more regularly together -- much as the Swedes, Aussies and Czechs do (notice the huge number of doubles stars among the Czechs; it is interesting that LP's partners in both Men's and Mixed Doubles are Czechs, David Rikl and Martina Navratilova; I wonder how much Czech he's picked up!).
