Not a good start, as we got upset today in the first tie.
India (4) l. Hong Kong 1-2
#2 Shweta Kakhandki d. Geraldine Leong 61 63
#1 Ashmitha Easwaramurthi l. Venise Chan 36 06
Kakhandki/ Gayathri Krishnan l. Chan/ Bertha Wang 36 36
Like I said in my notes, I thought our seeding from the ITF was a bit charitable .. Hope the girls will pull through in the remaining ties and make the QFs.

How old is Gayatri, Ramesh Krishnan's daughter? Is she already approaching 14 or still closer to 12?
From what I remember, Ramesh was already India's under-14 champion by the time he was 12, and when he was 15 he was competing with his 18 year old cousin Shankar for the under-18 title. Shankar became a businessman, seeing the writing on the wall quite early when Ramesh won the national men's title at 16 (beating Shankar in the semi and Royappa in the final). I have often wondered whether it would be possible for that family to produce a third (generation) world class player.

Gayatri turns 14 in two months, so she is not particularly younger than the others. She is a very good player, but it's fair to say that she has not made any big "breakthrough" noises yet. Reached quite a few semis (may be even a final or so) nationally in the u14 events, but has usually fallen to Shwetha and Ashmitha, if I remember correctly. Among the top 3-4 in that age range for sure. Let us hope she will come through in the next few years.

The girls were scheduled to play Thailand in the R3 match today, but it was postponed due to rain.
Having lost the first tie (to Hong Kong) and won the second tie (vs Indonesia), the girls need a good showing against Thailand in order to make it to the quarterfinal round.
