Rajeev Ram's victory over Chad Harris of Vanderbilt is a big one. Chad is ranked #16 in college tennis and he defeated 12th ranked Wilson of Illinois 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the finals of the team championship. Chad has been ranked in the top 100 of college tennis in his freshmen, sophomore and junior years. Rajeev was ranked #22 going into the NCAA championship but as Anonymous1 wrote earlier he probably is better than his ranking of 22. I hope I have not jinxed him.

I am sad to see Prakash lose in the first round. Hamid Mirzadeh is a freshman and has victories over #4 Bo Hodge, #7 Alex Hartman, #14 Rameez Junaid, #19 Romain Ambert, #21 Todd Widom, #25 Phillip King, #48 Seth Rose, etc. this year in college tennis. He plays # 1 singles for Univ of Florida.

Prakash Amritraj/Daniel Langre (USC) lost to Michael Kogan/Victor Romero (Tulane) (seeded 5-8) 6-7, 5-7 in the first round of NCAA Div I tennis championship.

Rajeev Ram won his first round doubles match today 7-5 and 6-2.

It appears that players from Illinois and Vanderbilt are having a tough time in the singles tournament. Is it a case of tired legs after having to play two matches daily for the past week to play each other in the team tennis championship match?

What is it about Indians and doubles? We appear to have a special ability with doubles, and grass-court experience or being brought up in India would be no explanation for Rajeev Ram's ability...

Harsh left school at the end of the 2001-2002 season after his 3rd year, once he was in the top-5 ranks in college and #1 for a while. No plans to go back to school till his tennis career is done (but he plans to get his degree then - he was a 3.75 GPA student at U.of.Minnesota and is quite good in academics too).

Prakash also has left school after his second year, the 2002-2003 season. No plans right now to go back to school.

From what we had heard earlier, Rajeev will be back in school this fall for his second year. Actually he may have decided to use up the NCAA-permitted one semester off for pro tennis. If so he will play the meat of the college season from January to May 2004. That will be his second year.

Stephen Amriraj @ Duke U

Post by IndiaFan1 »

Also, I beleive Stephen Amritraj, son of Anand continues for his second year at Duke University in Durham, NC USA. He had a decent freshman year, last year.

Rajeev has elected to leave the U of Illinois after one year and concentrate on tennis full-time:

In other college tennis news, the preseason rankings were released last week. Ravishankar Pathanjali (Western Michigan) is #72 on the men's list... Phillip King and Stephen Amritraj are listed as #11 on the double's preseason list.

I think it is a good move by Rajeev if he has planned out the next 6 months of professional matches properly and can get some coaching along the way. Playing four years of college tennis in USA has rarely produced a top 25 player in recent years (men).

Good luck to Rajeev!
