Women's ITF tournaments abroad - Nov 2022

Post by Dinesh »

There are a few tier-2 players who will participate in Sharm El Sheikh for the next 3 tournaments. Usually, these Egypt tournaments do not have a lot of higher ranked participants from India, but I came across Shrivalli Rashmikaa and Vaidehi Chaudari's (from week 2) names, so wanted to start a thread. Plus, Sowjanya Bavisetti seems to have arrived a week early and opted to play this week at the W15 event receiving a wildcard.

Starting next week, Vaidehi will also join the current Indian players at the W25 events.

At the W15 Sharm-El-Sheikh ITF, Egypt

Singles
R1 [2] Sowjanya Bavisetti (513) vs Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty (740)
R1 Ashmitha Easwaramurthi (1115) vs Aliona Falei (773)

Shrivalli with a Thai partner won her first-round doubles and will play the 4th seeded team in QF. :goodluck:

Sowjanya is having a tough match against a very talented 18-year old Russian (top-25 junior last year), Alion Falei, who was a semifinalist and runner-up in the previous two Sharm El Shaikh events she played recently. Sowjanya had to fight off a set point on Falei's serve at 40-30 and force a break to 5-5 in the first set. They have broken each other twice in the first set. But SB was soon down 0-40 on her own serve again though. Saved two BPs but is broken, and lost the set in the next game, 5-7

Tight match. 2-2 in the second. Sowjanya is broken in the 5th game but saved two BPs and held in the 7th game to avoid being in an even deeper hole. 3-4... Saved two match points in the 9th game on her own serve but went down at the 3rd MP... 5-7 3-6 loss, but to a very good player.

At 57 22, Sowjanya was only at 51 pts to 56 points in the match, but Aliona went 25-15 in the final 40 points.

The singles draw for this week's W25 isn't out yet, as the final Q round is tomorrow (Tuesday). The doubles draw is out and they are doing 8 first round doubles matches tomorrow. Vaidehi and Srivalli are playing together and facing the 3rd seeds. Sowjanya is playing with a Taiwanese player and Ashmitha is playing with an Egyptian. Shrivalli lost her qualifying match yesterday to a Lithuanian.

22 year old Vaidehi (IND,557) gave it a good ride but couldn't upset the 32 year old veteran former top-175 player Jia-Jing Lu (CHN,340) in a 16 76(6) 67(4) loss. Sowjanya and Ashmitha are yet to play today.

Sowjanya (#513) had another listless performance, losing 16 36 to Nina Stojanovic (SRB,637)... 33 year old Ashmitha (who should not be taking wildcards to singles anymore) got double-bagelled in her 10th straight singles loss, by a talented 20 year old Hong Kong player, Adithya Karunaratne (#301).

Sad to see even Hong Kong having more top-400 players (three) than India has (two).

Just renamed this thread to "Women's IT abroad" to cover the W25s in Australia (with Ankita and Sahaja) also.

At the W25 in Traralgon, AUS (Hard):

[R1] (1) Ankita Raina (IND,301) vs Lily Fairclough (AUS,1177)
[R1] (8) Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND,491) vs Madison Frahn (AUS,1359)

[R1] Ankita Raina (IND)/ Zuzana Zlochova (SVK) vs (1) Naiktha Bains (GBR)/ Alana Parnaby (AUS)
[R1] Michika Ozeki (JPN)/ Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND) vs (3) Haruna Arakawa (JPN)/ Natsuho Arakawa (JPN)

Not sure why Ankita and Sahaja didn't play together rather than play with lower ranked partners.

Both Ankita and Sahaja play their R1 at 2:30 pm on Tuesday (9 am IST) ... Ankita livestream. Sahaja livestream link not posted yet.

Update: Rain delay there, but it has stopped for now and they are mopping the courts at 1 pm. Ankita's match may start at 2:30 as it is the first match on that court, but Sahaja's match may be delayed to 3:30 or 4 pm, as another match needs to get done.

Update: Rain again. Further delay.

After all the rain delays, they are playing again in Traralgon. Looks like Ankita's and Sahaja's matches will start between 3 and 4 pm there. It doesn't look like Sahaja's match will have a live video stream.

Update: Ankita match may be delayed quite a bit. There seems to be a men's match there before she can play. So no idea. Was really looking forward to seeing Ankita after quite a while :(

I went to sleep when Sahaja had lost the first set, getting broken almost every time she served, but repeatedly breaking back. I think there were 4 breaks each. Glad to see that she got going later in the match. I guess there was rust in her game, from having played only one match (a 36 36 loss) in the last 30+ days. She had five DFs in the first set too, and only two after that.

Sahaja will need to play much better in the next match against Priska Madelyn Nugroho who is very talented (former world junior #9). Sameer, it seems she is still only 19. I thought she was older too. She generally stopped playing juniors 2 years early, after reaching world #9 by late 2019. But after the Covid break, I think she has taken a while to get going in the pro tour. But she was in four M15 finals in a row in Monastir this Jul-Aug (15 wins in a row, dropping only two sets in 32, one to Vaidehi to whom she had lost in Gurugram earlier!). Priska has looked more human after that though. Should be a good match against Sahaja.

Vaidehi won the Q3 over Nahia Berecoechea (FRA,838) 75 64, but Srivalli got double-bagelled by Polina Iatcenko (RUS,596).

In the tough main draw, with some 12 top-400 players (Jeez!),

[R1] Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND,507) vs Zhuoxuan Bai (CHN,364)
[R1] (Q) Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,549) vs (4) Tessah Andrianjafitrimo (FRA,244)

Would be terrific if either can pull an upset but it is very doubtful...

Some of our players are in Nairobi, Kenya playing at the W15 Futures for the next 2 weeks. Only, 2 of them are ranked - Sharmada Balu and Sravya Shivani, who are yet to play their first-round singles encounters. I will post the results once they finish (and hopefully, win) tomorrow. Sharmada is the top seed in doubles and received a BYE in the opening round, while Shivani and her partner received a walkover in theirs.

Ankita's R1 match video stream from the W25 in Traralgon, AUS.

Was supposed to start at 10 am but it started raining during the second game. So held up. They have mopped the courts somewhat dry, but it looks like it will rain again soon, as of noon. What is new? This match just can't get going :(

Update: Started again at 12:20 pm there. Ankita playing well; but the opponent is just a junior player, who doesn't have much to trouble AR. Ankita seems physically fine, moving well and hitting her returns nicely. But she loses focus for no reasons and drops serve at 5-2, up two breaks. This was happening in UK earlier too. Sudden penchant to make unforced errors. 5-3... She broke again though, to take the set. 6-3
