Yeah, a couple of our players like Sahaja and Prajnesh ran into the hottest players of the week in their respective levels on tour.

At the W25 in Traralgon (AUS) this week,

[R1] (5) Ankita Raina (IND,302) vs Haruna Arakawa (JPN,424)
[R1] Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND,487) vs (WC) Zara Brankovic (AUS, ITF/1213)

Pretty easy win for Ankita at Traralgon today.

[R1] (5) Ankita Raina (IND,302) d. Haruna Arakawa (JPN,422), 63 60

Sahaja's R1 match should be starting soon.

Sahaja's match at the Traralgon W25 got interrupted by rain when she was down a break at 2-4, but she came back and won it later.

[R1] Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND,488) d. (WC) Zara Brankovic (AUS, ITF/1218), 46 63 60

Sahaja is also not in her best form. She got broken 5 times (only twice after the first set) and btoke Zara nine times. She shouldn't have struggled that much in the first set though. She also served 8 double faults, which is too many. She now plays the 8th seed Destanee Aiawa (AUS,401) who was lost the semis last week to Naiktha Bains after beating an injury-affected Ankita in the QF. Destanee got an injury retirement in the first game of her R1 match here, so Sahaja has more court-comfort advantage. Should be a good match.

Ankita's second round opponent is yet to be determined. Both R2s will be on Friday. Eight R1 matches, mostly with Q/LL players are yet to be done due to rain delays.

Ankita is thru to QF but Seheja lost in second round.

At the W25 in Traralgon (AUS)

[R2] (5) Ankita Raina (IND,302) d. Michika Ozeki (JPN,632) 60 62
[R2] Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND,487) l. (8) Destanee Aiawa (AUS,401) 06 26

Disappointing one sided loss for Sahaja. She did not have her best time in this Australian tour but hope she has learnt something from here which will help her improve her game.

[QF] (5) Ankita Raina (IND,302) vs. (3) Madison Inglis (AUS,182)

Sahaja is yet another of our players who need to get under a good coach's advice and spend the off-season to fix the game that has deteriorated - which happens over elongated periods of being on the tour or in uncertain plans about the tour due to visas and all, when one cannot even plan to fix up good practice sessions properly. She was totally error-prone in the matches (including doubles matches) that I watched from Australia. I mostly didn't report the details, as I didn't have the heart to write about it. She was depressingly mistake-prone. Double faults, with shots spraying all over the place and into the net. We can see every now and then the abilities that she has, but 1 good shot followed by 2 wild mistakes will not win any matches in tennis. Need to do physical training and focused work to get the accuracy back.

Thanks Jay for update on Sahaja's game. I did not see any of her matches here, in fact have not seen her play at all so far.

She will not have a much of a off season though. There are couple of W25's in Solapur and Navi Mumbai in the weeks of December 12 and 19 followed by W15 in Gwalior in the week of December 26. Maybe she can skip Gwalior one. But then at the start of next year in January there are a couple of W40 ( new series) in Thailand for W40's in Bhopal and Pune. And for someone like Sahaja who is struggling so much for funds to travel abroad cannot afford to miss tournaments home and close to home.

Maybe she can take time off somewhere in Feb.

That is a really nice upset win for Ankita  . I couldn't watch the match though. Hope she gets revenge on Destanee, who got a walkover to the semis, and has been getting the luck from others' issues. Hope her luck runs out now!

Ankita is also in the doubles semis coming up today, with Priska Madelyin. Hope she doesn't get too tired. I think the doubles SF will be after the singles SF though. If she wins in singles, maybe she should pay Nugroho to fake an injury ( :-) ) and give a w/o, so she can preserve energy for tomorrow.

Early breaks exchanged and it is 2-2 in first set.

2 easy holds for 3-3.

Destanee holds for 4-3 and it seems Ankita has taken a medical timeout. :-(

And gets broken immediately for 3-5.

Destanee holds after a long service game to take the first set 6-3.

I am only watching a few points here and there. Ankita was stroking the ball well, especially at the beginning. Some of those returns had mustard on them. But I guess the neck or shoulder problem she has (my guess, having seen the trainer work earlier on her) returned. Could not see what the trainer was working on today, as it was behind the umpire chair. Serving seemed to become a problem though the shots seemed okay after the medical timeout. But this is an uphill task, and Destanee may get lucky for the umpteenth time, again.

Ankita up 4-1 in second set.

But, Ankita broken back and back on serve . 4-3 with Destanee to serve.

Ankita breaks for 5-3.

And she holds to take the second set 6-3.

Wow, Ankita being Ankita. So great to see our old Ankita back. Never giving up. Hope she can win the third set despite the physical ailments. That is a lot of tennis today.
