Digvijay retired at 46 01 against Ryuki Matsuda in the SF today at Mumbai. So, one more final without an Indian :(

Among all the events this week, we had 5 players abroad (Prajnesh, RamK, Ankita, Sahaja, Vaidehi), and 4 players (Niki, Sid V, Sid R, Digvijay) in India who made QFs, for 9 total. Two got injured and lost in the QFs (Ankita, Vaidehi), only 1 advanced to SF (Digvijay) and he retired today too. That is sort of the story of Indian tennis these days.

Meanwhile, yet another title, the 4th in a row for Niki and Rithwik. They won the final over the top seeds Vishnu and Orlov, 62 62. Toutine ho0hum affair for them. They don't give a chance to anybody to even think of beating them these days.

This is the 5th final in the last 6 tournaments for them, and they have won all five titles. 20-1 in the last 21 matches. They have won 17 of those matches (and 9 in a row now) in straight sets without an STB - which is unbelievable in doubles these days. Wow. Remarkable consistency.

Niki will move up from 428 to inside 380 this coming Monday, and should be go up to around 345 a week later. Rithvik will move up from 525 to inside 440 on Monday and should be up inside 375 after another week. They are all set to play in challengers from now on.

Yes, this pair has looked absolutely unbeatable in last 3 weeks. Indicates that they are playing at a much higher level and should win at least some matches at challenger level too.

Sehaja and Vaidehi lost in second round, not in QF.

Overall still a much better week than last couple of weeks.

^^^ Oh, yeah. So 7 in the QF and 1 in the SF this week. Still bad. I wanted 3 in the SF and 1 in the final :)

As I grow older, algebra leaves me, and now even counting leaves me :)

Palan beat Crawford in the other semi and then beat Matsuda in the final to take title at the Mumbaii M25

We move to the Bhilai M15 this week. The qualies are on. The top 5 seeds had byes in the Q1, and that included 2nd seed Madvin Kamath, 4th seed Ajay Malik etc. No surprises in the first round. In the Q2 round, only a couple of matches look interesting, or doubtful in results. Madhvin versus VM Ranjeet and Nishant Dabas versus 5th seed Lakshit Sood.

Looks like Manish withdrew late last week from the Bhilai M15... It was pretty clear that Manish was having some issue in the first three events. Unfortunate, after his title at the Finesta Nationals earlier. To make it worse, it seems Digvijaypratap Singh also withdrew this weekend. Also unfortunate, after his good work winning one event and reaching a semi. The never-ending story of our players. They do well one or two weeks in a row and they are gone with injuries or whatever for longer periods.

No big surprises in the Q2 matches today. Unfortunately, the second seed Madhvin Kamath had to run into the one unseeded player who I thought could beat him. Experienced VM Ranjeet, who did just that. Sushant Dabas (19 yrs) beat the 5th seed Lakshit Sood and made Q3.

Here is the Bhilai Main draw. With Manish and Digvijay out, there is much less excitement this week. Niki and Sid are there as the 6th and 3rd seeds. They both, 18 yr old wildcard Chirag Duhan and last week's runner-up Ryuki Matsuda are all in one quarter of the draw and will beat each other to make the semis, sadly. Rather doubtful if any other Indian can make the semis, looking at the draw. If Ryuki continues to play well into this week, maybe no Indian will make the SF. Let us hope for one of the above three in the SF or for a surprise from Adil, Ishaq, Faisal, Nitin or Karan though.

Two 19 year olds made the second round at Bhilai. Ajay Malik, the forgotten youngster in this Indian circuit, produced a very good upset of the 7th seed Boris Butulija and made the second round as a qualifier, and Karan Singh showed yet again that he is coming along quite well by beating a good player in Faisal Qamar (who notably went 8-1 in the previous three events' qualifiers before making the main draw here directly) in a 3-set comeback in a final tiebreaker. Talented 18 year old Chirag Duhan could not get past Rishab Agarwal, despite serving 9 aces in the match. Mistake-prone, I assume. Karan runs into the second seed Palan and Ajay faces experienced VM Ranjeet next :) ...

10 Indians are in the second round. Three play each other and will make the QFs. Hopefully a couple more will advance. 3rd seed Sid Rawat, 5th seed Nitin Sinha and 6th seed Niki are all in the R2. But Sid and Nitin play tough Japanese guys Ryotaro and Ryuki - and our guys have struggled against them. Nitin gets the easier one, Ryotaro, but Sid needs to be in his best form to beat Ryuki. Also, Karan and Rishi Reddy play the 2nd and 4th seeds too, so I am not sure if we will have even 4 or 5 guys in the QFs.

^^ Well, the Japanese proved to be too tough like I expected, as the seeds Nitin and Sid went down to them. Both had good starts, but sadly, both faltered late in the third set.

But we got the best upset by a youngster, and from the one on whom I was more focused than anybody else - Karan Singh. The 19 year old upset the second seed in a comeback win, 57 62 64. Rishi Reddy pulled a straight set upset of the 4th seed as well.

So we have 5 Indians in the QFs. Niki and Rishi get the two Japanese guys, and VM Ranjeet get the top seeded Russian, Orlov. Karan plays Dalwinder, so we will have at least one in the semis.

So, our 2 seeds got upset by 2 Japanese but our 2 guys upset 2 seeds. So, kind of evens out in terms of how many guys we would have expected in QF. 5 out 8 is fair enough although it could so easily have been 7 out of 8 Indians in QF as Sid and Nitin lost in a close third set.

Good win by Karan over last week's winner Palan. He is showing good promise.

Alright! Karan is arriving (too early to say he "has arrived")... and that is probably the best news we have got this year in Indian tennis. The 19 year old beat Dalwinder Singh today, and made the semifinal against the ironman, Niki. The scoreline was even more impressive, at 60 63. Niki had an excellent win against last week's runner-up Ryuki Mtasuda by a 63 64 score too. So we will have an Indian in the final. Better than I expected, for sure. The other final is between the top seed Orlov and Matsumada.

Karan lost to Niki in straight sets a couple of weeks ago. Lets see if he can reverse that result. Niki seems to be in very good form though. So, it will be tough for Karan.

Yeah, if Karan can upset Niki, that will be something!

Meanwhile, Niki and Rithvik are in yet another doubles final. I have lost count on how many in a row. I believe it is 5 in a row, and the 6th final in the latest 7 events. They won all 5 of the previous finals - 2 in Monsatir and 3 in India. 19 wins in a row and 28 of the last 29 matches. They haven't even dropped a set in 12 matches. 24 sets in a row, and only 2 even went to a tiebreaker. Truly remarkable consistency and dominance.

Karan gave a massive fight to Niki before going down 57 67(0). He was up a break in the second set at 4-2 but Niki broke him back, and then led 5-4, but Karan broke him again, I think, to take it to 6-6. But in the final TB, it was all iron-man Niki. Very tough for a 19 year old to get past him. So, Niki is in the final against the top seed Orlov, who seems to be in great form.

But first Niki has to try and win one more doubles title today, I guess! The guy is such a work horse :notworthy:

Niki and Rithvik had another straight sets win for another title - 76(7) 61 over Rishab Agarwal and Sai Kartheek Ganta. 6th final and 6th title in the last 7 events they have played. 3 M25s and 3 M15s.

Great run by them. Niki is 347 and Rithwik is 375 in live rankings now. Once 15 more points are added for this week's title, Niki will move up to around 320 and Rithwik around 355. I don't know if they are playing any more tournaments this year. Maybe they will to make it top 300 and they can concentrate only on challengers next year.
