Asia Oceania Junior Championships (JB1), Pune- Sept 19-25 , 2022

Post by sameerph »

Chance for Indian juniors to win something significant and gain a lot of points as Asia Oceania junior championships start tomorrow in Pune.

In boys singles, we have 4 of the seeds - second seed Aman Dahiya, third seed Yavan Nandal, fifth seed Manas Dhamne and Sixth seed Aryan Shah. Other 4 seeds are 2 from Australia ( including top seed Hayden Jones), Korea and Japan. Some of our younger promising players too are there- Rushil Khosla, Krish Tyagi, Rethin Pranav etc. Hope they beat some foreign players. 15 Indians in 32 player draw.

In girls singles, we have 3 seeds - second seed Shruti Ahlawat, fourth seed Vaishnavi Adkar and fifth seed Suhitha Maruri. 4 of the other 5 seeds are Australians except top seed who is from Taiwan.

The QFs will be an important test for the Indian contingent. 14 year old Manas is the one I'm paying greatest attention to here. I hope his handlers are paying as much attention to his fitness and physical training as to his tennis.

Shruti Ahlawat's form is also of interest.

All the Indian boys won their quarter-finals, so it will be an all-Indian SF line-up in Pune. Pretty impressive for the "Asia-Oceania Junior Championships". We will have an Indian boy as the "Asia-Oceania Junior Champion, 2022" -- a nice credential to carry through the next phases of life.

Yes, all boys SF but only 1 girl in the SF.

These are full QF results-

Boys

(5) Manas Dhamne (IND) d. Takamasa Mishiro (JPN) 62 64
(3) Yuvan Nandal (IND) d. (8) Reiya Hattori (JPN) 62 75
(6) Aryan Shah (IND) d. (4) Woohyuk Chang (KOR) 64 64
(2) Aman Dahiya (IND) d. Suphawat Saeoui (THA) 61 64

Girls

(1) Yu-Yun Li (TPE) d. Sonal Patil (IND) 62 62
(6) Lily Taylor (AUS) d. (4) Vaishnavi Adkar (IND) 57 63 46
(3) Emerson Jones (AUS) d. (5) Suhitha Maruri (IND) 63 62
(2) Shruti Ahlawat (IND) d. Asylzhan Arystanbekova (KAZ) 61 60

So, big chance grabbed by Indian boys to take big points here and claim their place in Australian open juniors for next year. Aman Dahiya is not eligible for juniors next year but Manas, Yuvan and Aryan all are eligible next year for juniors ( Aryan for 2 more year and Manas for 3 more years in fact). So, one of them winning the title this week will almost seal the place for them for AO juniors.

Same goes for Shruti. But, she will have to overcome 2 tough matches against foreign players to win a title here.

Wow, great results by the Indians! I thought our juniors were not showing much promise, so this is a nice surprise especially by those that have junior eligibility for several years.

Good show by our boys!!

Aryan Shah and Yuvan are 2005 born. They are eligible to play slams for one year (2023).

Manas is 2007. So he has 3 years of eligibility.

Shruti is 2006 born and is eligible to play slams for next 2 years

All Indian boys finals will be between Manas and Aryan.

[SF] (5) Manas Dhamne (IND) d. (3) Yuvan Nandal (IND) 63 36 63
[SF] (6) Aryan Shah (IND) d. (2) Aman Dahiya (IND) 62 76(4)

With that 14 year old Manas is set to get to around 105 in ITF junior rankings and 16 year old Aryan will rise to around 115. Both do not have any points to defend any more points this year. So, at the least their year end rankings will be around this which means with half of 2014 boys going out of rankings at the start of next year, they both will be around 55-65 in new rankings and almost guaranteed Australian open junior main draw. A title for either of them will absolutely seal it. And of course expect them to win more points in rest of the year.

Rushil Khosla and Yuvan Nandal won the boys doubles title. With that 17 year old Yuvan too will be very close to making the AO main draw. 16 year old Rushil would have go deep in a couple of tournaments to try to get into AO qualies at least.

In girls doubles, sister pairing of Vaishnavi and Asmi Adkar upset 2nd seeded Australian pair in the SF to move into final against another Australian pair seeded third.

Great week for Indian juniors.

Ranking projections-

Manas will be somewhere close top 75- he has no points to defend till end of the year- so when 2014 borns go out of rankings at the end of the year, Manas should be top 40 and is guranteed a main draw spot at Australian open even if he does not win anything for rest of the year. Unless someone younger makes a big move up the ranking till end of the year, Manas will be youngest in the field.

Aryan Shah who is 16 will be around 115, he should be around 60 at the start of next year and should make it to AO juniors main draw.

17 year Yuvan Nandal will be around 105 but he has 100 points to defend till end of the year. So, in worst case scenario of him not winning anything from now on, he will still be around 70 at the start of the year and can make the AO main draw and will certainly make qualies draw.

16 year old Rushil will be around 190 but he has to defend 120 points this year, so will need some good results in rest of the year to make it AO qualifying draw at least.

On girls side, Shruti Ahalwat will be in top 50 now. She has 270 singles points to defend for rest of the year though and some in doubles too. In worst case scenerio, she should be ranked somewhere 75 at the start of next year, certain for AO qualies. 60-80 points somewhere will take her to main draw.

Aman Dahiya and Vaishnavi Adkar will also have good rise in the ranking but they are in their last year of junior eligibility.

So, after a drought in junior slams for last couple of years, we should have 3 boys ( possibly 4 ) in boys and 1 in girls. Some surprise good performances from players below can get them into qualies too.
