W25 Chiang Rai, Thailand - Week of May 30th

Post by Dinesh »

Ankita, Karman, Riya, Rutuja are in the main draw acceptance list. Vaidehi, Shrivalli Rashmikaa, Jennifer Luikham, Humera, and 4 more Indian players are in the qualifying entry list. Good to see Karman making a comeback from another one of her injury breaks. Hope she gets some easy opening round matches. What happened to Pranjala?

There are also couple of 25K tournaments for men in the same couple of weeks that these womens tournaments. Only Nitin Kumar Sinha appears for us in main draw but a few more in qualifing draw. So, we can discuss those results in same thread.

Ankita Raina pulled out of this week, still in the entry list for next week.

None of the Indian men or women made it thru qualifying. In women, Vaidehi, Shivalli, Nidhi all lost in final qualifying round.

Karman, Riya and Rutuja in womens main draw and Nitin Sinha and Faisal Qamar in mens main draw which starts tomorrow.

Good win. Hope she can sustain this post injury break. None of our players made career high after coming back from injury. Mostly true since Somdev days. Yuki had so many injuries that I can't ascertain if his career high was before a major injury or after.

So it would be great if Kamran is able to overcome her previous high of 180. One step at a time.

For Karman and Yuki it is a question of staying fit. When they are fit and playing they can very quickly get back to quite high level - Karman at least top 200 and Yuki mostly top 100. Key is to stay fully fir for stretch of at least a couple of years and they have not been able to do that.

Rutuja lost against top seed.

[R2] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,503) l. (1) Nao Hibino (JPN,214) 36 06

Next,

[QF] Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,478) vs. (4) Luksika Kumkhum (THA,458)

Another tough one for Karman against former top 70 player.

Karman lost against Kumkhum whom no Indian has managed to beat after so many years.

Apparently some really partisan line-calling throughout the match, but especially during the second-set tiebreak, helped Khumkum a great deal. Bad luck for Karman, after that nice win in the previous round.

Rutuja and Ankita go thru to the QF. Karman lost to in-form Chinese Xinyu Gao who won the title last week without dropping a set and has now won 7 matches without dropping a set.

[R2] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,505) d. Naho Sato (JPN,671) 63 61
[R2] (Q) Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,789) l. Momoko Bokori (JPN,569) 16 06
[R2] Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,517) l. Xinyu Gao (CHN,760) 46 36
[R2] (2) Ankita Raina (IND,363) d. Erica Sema (JPN,471) 64 75

Now, Ankita faces Xinyu to try to break her winning streak.

Next,

[QF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,505) vs. Patcharin Cheapchandej (THA,917)

[QF] (2) Ankita Raina (IND,363) vs. Xinyu Gao (CHN,760)

Decent results by the Indians in this tournament! Also, they are higher ranked in the QF matchups, so hopefully they can go further here...

Rutuja makes it to the semi final but Ankita loses in a very close match against an in-form player.

[QF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,505) d. Patcharin Cheapchandej (THA,917) 63 63

[QF] (2) Ankita Raina (IND,363) l. Xinyu Gao (CHN,760) 75 46 57

Rutuja is into first SF at this level since more than 2 years. She also made it to the doubles final along with her Japanese partner. So, very good week for her.

Next up against top seed-

[SF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,505) vs. (1) Nao Hibino (JPN,244)

Hibino is a former top 60 player and made it to final qualifying round of French open recently.

Rutuja lost the singles final tamely but won the doubles title. I saw part of her singles SF and she seemed to be affected by some injury as was just rolling her serve in and many times served underarm. Same in doubles, but it affected less to them in doubles.

Anyway, second doubles title of the year for Rutuja.

Both times Yuki made it to the 80s in the rankings was after a long 9-month run of tournaments that had followed an injury break. Once he came back from the 600s, the other time from around 400. But he got injured once he reached the 80s and had to start the cycle again.
