Sowjanya beats Rutuja to qualify for main draw.

[Q2] (9) Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND,649) d. (6) Rutuja Bhosale (IND,511) 75 75

But, she gets a tough draw against top seed.

Main draw -

[R1] (Q) Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND,649) vs. (1) Sujeong Jang (KOR,181)

[R1] (8) Ankita Raina (IND,341) vs. Kyoko Okamura (JPN,355)

Ankita has had a free fall to 341 in rankings from starting the year with a ranking of 202. Desperately needs some wins in singles.

Yes! Now she has to build on this success and win a few more rounds (and a lot more WTA points). This is something our players rarely do.

Excellent win by Sowjanaya, i think her career best and also one of the best for Indian women players in recent months.

Ankita also had her first win since October after a battle after an 2 hour 55 mins battle.

[R1] (Q) Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND,649) d. (1) Sujeong Jang (KOR,181) 64 36 64

[R1] (8) Ankita Raina (IND,341) d. Kyoko Okamura (JPN,355) 61 46 63

Next,

[R2] (Q) Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND,649) vs. Chihiro Muramatsu (JPN,360)

[R2] (8) Ankita Raina (IND,341) vs. Destanee Aiva (AUS,452)

This is rare. Two Indian girls in round two of a challenger outside India.

Ankita won her second round match in straight sets. 7-5 6-3. Good job against a talented Aussie who had a win against Qiang Wang earlier this year.

And, Sowjanya got thrashed by the Japanese player 6-0 6-1 :damn:

It is tough to pull upsets back to back, but it is such a downer when our players just disappear in matches after they pull a big upset. We see it all the time. At least put up a fight... But it is good to see Ankita getting a couple of good wins after a long period of poor form, illness etc.

Good wins by Ankita and also good to see Sowjanya scored an upset in the main-draw.
In the doubles also Ankita and Rutuja started with a routine win.

[R1] (4) Ankita Raina (IND)/ Rutuja Bhosale (IND) bt Lu Jiajing (CHN)/ Abbie Myers (AUS) 63 63

[QF] (4) Ankita Raina (IND)/ Rutuja Bhosale (IND) vs Merel Hoedt (NED)/ Alexandra Osborne (AUS)

In singles, Ankita plays second seed next,

[QF] (8) Ankita Raina (IND,341) vs. (2) Arina Rodionova (AUS,179)

Ankita had beaten Rodionova last year in French open qualifying. Hope she can repeat that. Needs some big points desperately.

Ankita is a better player than her ranking. So yes she enters as favourite. She has to win tournaments like this.
