All 4 final round qualifiers in Winston Salem are now in the main draw as lucky losers. Wonder if Mukund is still there in case there is another withdrawal. I guess if he is still on site there is a very slim chance of him getting into the main draw with another withdrawal.

Goffin now replaced by a 1st round lucky loser. Unfortunately it was not Mukund.

Very impressive win for Sania/McHale in Cleveland:

[QF] Sania Mirza/Christina McHale (IND/USA) d. 3-Lucie Hradecka/Zhang Shuai (CZE/CHN) 63 63

Sania moves up to 129 in the doubles live rankings, Christina is 106. Hradecka is 37th and Zhang is 27th, which is what makes this win impressive.

Sania's last title was, of course, in Hobart last year (January 2020).

[SF] Sania Mirza/Christina McHale (IND/USA) d. Ulrikke Eikeri/Catherine Harrison (NOR/USA) 76(5) 62

which brings up:

[F] Sania Mirza/Christina McHale (IND/USA) vs. 1-Shuko Aoyama/Ena Shibahara (JPN/JPN)

Christina McHale has just 2 doubles titles and a career-high doubles ranking of 35; the last time she made a WTA doubles final was in September 2019. It is amazing what Sania is able to achieve in doubles with whoever she chooses to partner!

Has anyone seen any of Sania's matches? Has her fitness been improving? She's got a WC to the US Open to play doubles with Coco Vandeweghe. I hope they both do well at the US Open.

Watched her Cincinnati match last week. She lost that. She needs to improve her fitness. The opponents were trim and agile (and younger). One cannot roll back the clock but one can get fitter.

^^^ How times have flown by... I remember reporting on her earliest matches when she was 14 years old 20 years ago... But from the pictures, it looks like she can lose a little weight, which would help. Not easy though.

[F] Sania Mirza / Christina McHale l. 1-Shuko Aoyama/Ena Shibahara (JPN/JPN) 57 36

Tough loss in the final to a strong pair. That she can make the final of a WTA250 event with a scratch partner suggests that Sania is playing at an excellent level, despite the extra weight she seems to have put on in the past year. (She was looking a lot trimmer when she returned in January 2020, but then got quickly injured; it isn't easy being a mother and pro player).

Yes, Jay, you alerted us to her potential long before anyone outside our little circle knew about her. I remember the time she came into our chat group when she was about 15 years old.

Yes, I remember those days. You just had daily updates from "JayKay", I don't think there was a forum for discussion. Around 1999. Nirupama V was the only woman player from India, and Lee was the male player.
