French Open 2019

Post by PKBasu »

Prajnesh Gunneswaran will be in the singles main draw, but only one Indian male (Ramkumar Ramanathan) will be playing the qualifiers this year. Saketh will narrowly miss out again, it seems.

But two of our women players, Ankita Raina (171) and Karman Kaur Thandi (222) are going to play the qualifiers. Good luck to them all!!

Karman is not going to be in the qualifiers. The qualifying draw is only 96 in womens as compared to 128 in men. Only at French it seems. At other slams they have gone to 128 qualities draw in women too.

So, Karman is not going to make it. In any case, she is still recovering from injury due to which she has not played for past 2-3 months. Hopefully, she will be back for Wimbledon qualies.

As it turns out, Saketh made the qualies draw as last direct acceptance but he had already committed to Jerusalem Challenger and had traveled there. So, he was taken out from the qualifying list. :-(

Oh, hard luck or maybe he is seriously aiming for Wimbledon qualifying.

Our doubles pairing r decided for the French Open, an interesting pairing of Jeevan and Mischa Zverev.
Rohan Bopanna (IND)/ Marius Copil (ROU)
Leander Paes (IND)/ Benoit Paire (FRA)
Divij Sharan (IND)/ Marcelo Demoliner (BRA)
Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (IND)/ Mischa Zverev (GER)

Alternate: Purav Raja (IND)/ Nicholas Monroe (USA)

You what? Who is advising these players? Has got to be the most brain dead decision.

Utter insanity, isn't it? Why the hell do Indian players uniquely do such stupid things -- jumping into another tournament when they are eligible for a Slam? What harm will waiting out one week do?

In this case I would not put too much blame on Saketh. He probably did not expect the cut to drop about 20 spots from the original cut-off of 227 and he will make it in. But, he also has to try to at least ensure Wimbledon qualies and Jerusalem Challenge this week is his last chance to do so. Also I think previously at one of the Australian opens, Saketh had travelled there and found himself 1 spot out from the final draw.

I hope he win a few rounds at Jerusalem Challenger and seals his Wimbledon qualies spot which will somewhat reduce his pain of missing out on FO qualies.

Saki has not been playing well. I really doubt if he would get past R1 in the French open qualies. Maybe the extra rounds that he might play at Jerusalem will help him find some form as well as fitness.

Terrible :damn:

Ramkumar used to be very comfortable on clay, but he has now become a grass-courter. I hope he travels to the UK now, and starts playing early on grass. Time to maximise the points from his favourite surface!

Ankita Raina plays 15-year-old Cori Gauff (USA, 320) in Q1.
Looks very winnable. If she duly wins, she could face the 21st seed Kaja Juvan (SLO, 132).
In Q3, Ankita is drawn to play the top-seed Bernarda Pera (USA, 83). The last one will be tough, but hopefully Ankita will be feeling good after two wins and will put in the herculean effort needed to qualify.

Cori Gauff is unlikely to be a pushover.

Cori Gauff is NOT a winnable match for Ankita.
