Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
Our guys get the first break of the tie in the second set to lead 5-2 in the second set.
Hope this is the lucky break that we needed to make a comeback in this tie.

But, Divij's serve broken in the 4th game at the third break point and we trail 1-3 in the third set.

We break right back for 2-3. So, some fight is still on. But, we serving second in this set may turn out crucial. Lets see.

And they win it.
[D] Rohan Bopanna/ Divij Sharan (IND) d. Simon Bolleli/ Matteo Barettinni (ITA) 46 63 64
Brings it back to 1-2.
Prajnesh up against Seppi against. Can Prajnesh pull it off ?

A good comeback by Rohan and Divij after a break down in the third at 1-3.
In the first reverse singles, can Mahesh surprise the Italians fielding Saki in the place of Prajnesh?

Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
The joy was short lived. Prajnesh could not put up much of fight against Seppi.
[R2] Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,102) l l Andreas Seppi (ITA,37) 16 46
Watched some part of this match. Prajnesh just tried to outrally Seppi from baseline which he could not do. He should have probably come to the net more but he tried a few times and failed miserably. So, that is not his game. Also made a few more unforced errors than usual. Seppi was too good in the end.

Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
Very true. He did try to come at the net but played the baseline game even at net and was not successful at all. But he played his way better in the 2nd set and just wasn't enough to outsmart the experienced Seppi.
Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
Sometime back I had raised the prospect that the “Laver Cup” a.k.a ATP World Team Cup will start competing for attention with the Davis Cup.
Sudarshan’s article below seems to confirm my thoughts on this.

Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
It is wrong to compare the current crop with Vijay or Ramesh or Leander who could raise their game for Davis Cup and punch above their weight. Even Som did it on a couple of occasions. I think the present group has reached its saturation level in terms of performance and ranking. I would love to be proved wrong.

Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
Vijay and Ramesh were world-class players who spent much of their careers in the top-40, so we cannot really compare the current crop with them. Leander was a very special player when in India colours.
Prajnesh did deliver in Tianjin, but perhaps the Italian team was a bit too good in terms of quality.
A pity that the 5th match wasn't played. Germany beat Hungary 5-0, so Ramkumar should have been allowed to play the final match.

Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
As we have seen in last few years, the current batch of players are very good at Asian level but short of world group level. Since, 2014 we have reached world group playoff stage every year but lost 6 straight matches against that opposition- Serbia (twice),Czech Republic, Spain,Canada and now Italy.
We need to have 2 singles players of at least top 75 level to starting to beat these teams and a decent doubles team.
One positive in this loss is win by Rohan-Divij who beat a quality team which should give them some confidence.

Re: Davis Cup 2019 - India
Looking foward to future, we are back now to Asia Oceania group I. Of the teams in qualifiers, Australia ,Japan and Kazakhstan won and advanced to finals.
India, Uzbekistan and China lost and will be back in group I. These will be joined by next 3 best ranked teams in Asia- Oceania- Korea, Pakistan and Lebanon.
So, we are likely to face one of these 3 teams in September and a win there will take us back to qualifiers next year again.
Korea and Pakistan away, Lebenon at home. Korea will be tricky if Chung plays, other 2 should be easy.
