India ITF Junior Circuit January 2019

Post by sameerph »

Usual early season Indian ITF junior circuit begins this week with a grade 3 in Chandigarh which will be followed by back to back grade 2 tournaments in Delhi and Kolkata and ends with a lower level grade 5 in Indore.

Earlier these tournaments used to be a platform for our fringe players in trying to raise their ranking to get into junior slams later in the year. But, last couple of years, the results have not been that good. Lets us see of any new young talent emerges this year.

14 year old Nikita is now in the final.

[SF] Nikita VISHWASE (IND,445) d. (2) Mai Napatt NIRUNDORN (THA,107) 76(4) 64

Really good run by her beating 2nd, 4th and 7th seeds on her way to the final. Just checked on her past results, she played lots of tournaments in and around US last year and also played the Pan American championships in October. So, it does appear that she was representing USA till late last year but now has India against name. Perhaps she was raised in US but how the change in nationality at such a young age ?

Anyway, looks a talented player at this age.

[F] Nikita VISHWASE (IND,445) vs. (6) Holly FISCHER (USA,275)

Adit is a local boy from NJ and I've seen him play in many junior tournaments. For a few years, he trained at the national tennis center in Queens with coach Jay Devashetty and team. He moved to a local club recently.

He has a very aggressive, offensive game and is extremely quick on the court. He turned 15 recently. Good to see that he gave a tough fight to Sacchitt. He has a bright (tennis) future ahead...

Only 1 Indian, top seed Sachhit Sharma was seeded in either of the sections. So, not much of an upset as such but it does show that our strength in juniors really looks bad since last couple of years.

Pretty disappointing performance by the Indian juniors as most could not even stay close in their matches. Seems to indicate that the Indian academies aren't very good at either identifying or developing talent (or both).

Sandeepti Singh Rao had a good win over last weeks winner, so hopefully she will go further here.

She could not do much against the top seed.

[QF] Weronika BASZAK (POL) [1] 6-4 6-0 Sandeepti Singh RAO (IND)

Last week's singles finalist Nikita Vishwase with her Thai partner won the doubles title.

Overall not much of promise shown here by our players. Only consolation in couple of 14 year olds, Nikita Vishwase and Sandeepti Singh Rao have pulled of some very good wins.

This seems to validate one of my earlier observations that Indian Juniors seem to take longer to develop compared to their international peers. Overall the Indian player peaks at a later stage - in their mid to late 20’s compared to other international players. Vijay Amritraj also made a similar observation, maybe there is some explanation for this?

We keep seeing poor results in the Junior levels these days.

Se of our best may be wasting time (or in some cases improving too, I guess) at some foreign academies? Who knows! It has been pretty terrible lately...

Yes, this is probably the worst performance by Indian juniors in these series of tournaments in many years.

Remaining Indian boy lost in the QF against the top seed.

[QF] Stijn PEL (NED) [1] 6-1 6-3 Madhwin KAMATH (IND)

I am seriously worried about Indian junior talent now. Last 2-3 years we have been faring poorly in these junior tournaments as well as under 16 and under 14 junior Asian team events.
