Re: Australian open 2019
Great return by Tiafoe to get a minibreak, then makes a UFE to give it back to Prajnesh. 6-6.
Goes with serve to 7-8 when Prajnesh absolutely blows it smashing a routine ball wide to lose the set. Horrendous miss. I wish I could use a different word, but that's a choke. He had the entire court.
Quick thoughts after watching part of the set:
1. He needs to do way more with the Tiafoe second serve. He's returning it no better than the first serve.
2. Not generating a ton of pace on the backhand.

Lost the tiebreak 7-9. After the exchange of mini breaks, it stayed on serve, but Tiafoe managed the decisive mini-break when Prajnesh was serving at 7-8. Close but no cigar.

Re: Australian open 2019
He's going for broke early in points quite often. Not sure if that is strategic given the heat.
And, starts playing more patiently and is immediately rewarded with a break! 2-1 up second set.

Re: Australian open 2019
Gave the break back partially due to poor serving on the game, need to play from closer to baseline from where he is currently ..

Yes sony six is telecasting the match. Can also be seen on sonyliv or on jiotv. Prajnesh is two sets down. He is the one who looks down on morale right now.

Re: Australian open 2019
Tiafoe has figured out that as long as he is patient, he will win the point. Prajnesh has not shown the ability to hang in the longer rallies.
Well, bed time for me. Hope to wake up to good news, but not looking likely.

Re: Australian open 2019
Prajnesh held at love to go 3-2 up in the third set. Then he put some pressure on Tiafoe's serve, taking him to Deuce, but Tiafoe held for 3-3.
Prajnesh was then broken at 15, and Tiafoe held at love to make it 5-3. Prajnesh took his next service game to Deuce, but was broken to end it. Tough baptism at a Slam.
I'm sure Prajnesh will build on this, and start winning more rounds in ATP tournaments over the next two months. His ranking should quickly move into the top-100 and beyond if he stays fit and plays a reasonable schedule.

Re: Australian open 2019
Tough loss for Prajnesh. In the first set, he stayed with Tiafoe all the way. If he had not missed that easy overhead to lose the tie break, things could have been different. I thought it was very important for Prajnesh to win the first set here to get a morale boost which could have led to better performance in subsequent sets.
He started with an early break in the second set too but was broken back immediately serving 2 double faults in that game. The same thing had happened twice in his final qualifying match. Prajnesh needs to do work on holding on to his serve after getting a break.
All in all a good experience but Tiafoe was too good for him at least today.
Sadly since 2013 US open where Somdev reached the second round, none of the Indians have been able to win a match in the singles main draw of a slam. There have been 8 appearances in main draw since - ( 6 by Yuki, 1 each by Saketh and Prajnesh) but no win. Hope that changes soon this year.

Re: Australian open 2019
Leander/Miguel have a very tough R1 match against a pair that is ranked higher -- Artem is 35, Austin is 42, while Leander is 59 and Miguel is 58.jaydeep wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 8:18 am Also importantly Divij and Rohan r seeded ... Overall a decent draw for our pairs.
[R1] Nicholas Monroe (USA)/ Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (IND) vs Kevin Krawietz (GER)/ Nikola Mektic (CRO)
[R1] (15) Rohan Bopanna (IND)/ Divij Sharan (IND) vs Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP)/ Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP)
[R1] Leander Paes (IND)/ Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela (MEX) vs Austin Krajicek (USA)/ Artem Sitak (NZL)
Rohan/Divij don't have a gimme match either.
Interestingly, Jeevan/Nicholas may have the easiest match (although Mektic is ranked 14 in doubles, while Krawietz is 70th, close to Nic's 65 and Jeevan's 72). Mektic got to this ranking mainly partnering Alexander Peya (with whom he made 5 finals last year, winning 2 titles). Monroe has also made an ATP final with Mektic (Shenzhen Oct 2017), so he should know his game quite well.
