Re: Australian open 2019
I didn't watch the third set. From.the first two, my takeaway is that he needs to be more patient. Tiafoe wasn't constructing points well, just hitting hard. Prajnesh was impatient too often.
Also, he is going to need more oomph on the backhand side to compete at the ATP level.

Re: Australian open 2019
The recent success of Praj was due to keeping the ball in play and grinding out the points .
Tiafoe on the other hand didn’t allow it to happen and his shots were coming at blistering pace ,dumping huge serves , and swinging away winners which made Praj hit defensive shots and the extra speed and pace with which the ball came proved to be decisive in the end.
But no shame in losing , coming through tough qualifiers and making a GS MD.

Re: Australian open 2019
I got to see most all of the first set. My observations overall proved out - his best chance was to grab that first set but he blew it with that bad overhead miss. After that it was all downhill - but this is his first GS main draw match and hopefully it gets better from here. He must have got the feeling that he can hang with the top 50 - he needs to improve in a few key areas - backhand, serve, running/scrambling, closing out points when he is ahead. Lets give him some time, he may yet surprise us!!!

Great effort by Prajnesh! I'm sure we can expect good things from him this year. The $54K he pocketed for making it into the maindraw will no doubt help with expenses.

Re: Australian open 2019
I believe Prajnesh has a solid top 100 game. I was hoping that it was even better than that but the straight sets loss to Tiafoe indicates he has some improvements to make before he can move to the top 50. Looks like he is quite aware of it and is working on adding to his game, so here's hoping that he gets there later this year.

Re: Australian open 2019
There is little doubt that Prajnesh is a solid top-100 player, and his ranking would have reflected that in the old system -- and will soon under the new ranking system as well. He has reached this level the hard way, and clearly is working on adding more to his game. That he is constantly seeking to get better, and that he was able to adapt so well to grass last year (qualifying in at Stuttgart, and beating Shapovalov in the main draw) after making Q3 at the French Open, all speaks well of his all-round game. If he can stay fit and healthy, this should be another banner year for him.

Re: Australian open 2019
We are in trouble in mens doubles in first round.
Jeevan and Monroe lost a very close one.
[R1] Nicholas Monroe (USA)/ Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (IND) l. Kevin Krawietz (GER)/ Nikola Mektic (CRO) 64 67(8) 57
Did not follow the scores in first 2 sets but going by the scoreline Jeevan and Monroe may have had some match points in second set. In the third set, they had 2-3 breakpoint chances to go up 6-5 which they could not convert and then got broken in 12th game. Breakpoints won 2 out of 10 for our pair as against 2 out of 5 by the opponents. Tough loss for Jeevan.
Rohan-Divij got thrashed in the first set 1-6 but have won the second set 6-4. It is now 2-2 in the third set.
Leander-Reyes-Varela lost the first set 5-7 and are now 3-3 in the second set.
Need a big effort by both these pairs if our mens doubles campaign does not have to end today itself.

Re: Australian open 2019
Dvij is not a good partner for Rohan and his (Rohan) plans for entire year are all going to be messed up, Jeevan also won in India , and some of our WC’s also had a dream run in Chennai , so wining in India is not a bench mark.
Infact the match against Leander , Dvij was the weakest link amongst the 4 and they were just plain lucky to scrape through after saving match points , and even in the next round had to save match points , had those match points in both the matches gone other way , the title would have never come.
And now immediately after Pune , come these 2 quick first round loses , As a matter of fact , Leander is the ideal partner for Rohan , but sadly that is asking for the moon and only a miracle can bring Rohan & LP together in the DC.

Re: Australian open 2019
Frances Tiafoe has just knocked out Kevin Anderson in four sets in R2, so Prajnesh’s loss doesn’t look quite as bad.
If only he had made that overhead in the first set tiebreak...

Re: Australian open 2019
Quite stunning that we are out in R1 of Doubles too...one of our worst Slams in the past couple of decades.

Re: Australian open 2019
Does any of us care for Mixed Doubles anymore? Look forward to French Open, I guess.

Re: Australian open 2019
Honestly Jay, I don't even care for doubles anymore. Just hoping we can someday have a consistent singles players on the ATP tour.
