Australian open 2019

Post by sameerph »

Asia Pacific wild card playoff for Australian open is being held next week at Zuzhai,China.

Prajnesh,Sumit and Saketh all appear to be playing there as well as Pranjala in womens singles.

This is the mens singles acceptance lists as of now -

Direct Acceptances -
1. Prajnesh GUNNESWARAN IND 141
2. Hiroki MORIYA JPN 185
3. Duckhee LEE KOR 195
4. Soonwoo KWON KOR 220
5. Ze ZHANG CHN 221
6. Zhe LI CHN 228
7. Tsung-Hua YANG TPE 268
8. Yunseong CHUNG KOR 279

Qualifying Accptances -
1. Kaichi UCHIDA JPN 283
2. Renta TOKUDA JPN 297
3. Sumit NAGAL IND 310
4. Saketh MYNENI IND 315

Arjun Kadhe is second in alternates. Arjun, Saketh and Vishnu are also in doubles acceptances although paring is not clear.

In current form, pretty good chance for Prajnesh to win this one. Only flip is he will be playing third straight week and will be somewhat tired. I guess if he goes all the way and wins the title this week in Pune, he may not need to play this.

These are the womens singles acceptances -

1. Su Jeong JANG KOR 201
2. Fang Ying XUN CHN 207
3. Mai MINOKOSHI JPN 259
4. Peangtarn PLIPUECH THA 277
5. Hiroko KUWATA JPN 278
6. Pranjala YADLAPALLI IND 287
7. Shuai PENG CHN 298
8. Xinyu WANG CHN 306

A bit strange that Pranjala decided to skip Pune 25K where a title or final would have taken her close to AO qualifying and decided to play here and try directly for the main draw wild card. The entry list for Pune 25K is actually much tougher than this one here- 4 top 200 players and 4 more in top 250. So, she probably felt easier to try to win a main draw wild card here. Ankita/Karman could have also come here.

Thanks Sameer. Any idea why Ram K, Ankita and Karman are skipping the event? I know they will make the cut off for qualifying but why not try and get a direct entry where they will be favored to go far in the Asia Pacific Wild card event.

Peng Shuai is already in form after returning from her ban. Should also expect tough fights from the Xiyu/Xinyu Wangs? One of them got a WC last year.

Not sure about RamK but Karman and Ankita have chosen 25K tournament in Pune. Both are now outside top 200 (Ankita in live rankings). Although still look pretty much certain to make qualies draw at AO, they would want to end the year well inside top 200 using 4 25K tournaments in India. This will help them build some cushion for the remaining slams for the next year. It looks like they chose that over an event where it is really winner takes all. For a runner up, you do not get anything in terms of wild cards/points.

Prajnesh,Saketh and Sumit have all withdrawn from this wild card playoff. The mens singles main draw now only shows Arjun Kadhe and Siddharth Rawat.

Prajensh would have thought he would not be able to give his best playing third straight week and he is better off skipping. But, it would have been good for Sumit to try this out.

Womens singles entry list has not changed much and Pranjala will likely to be 7th seed.

Since there are some extra points for qualifying in, perhaps not a bad option for Prajnesh to qualify in especially since he may be tired after his excellent run over the next 2 weeks. Hopefully, he can pick up next year with the same kind of form as he should be a high seed in the qualies and have a very good chance of qualifying in...

Season comes to an end

Yes. Prajnesh had an abdomen strain and chose not to push it any further. It is very important that he takes cue from what happened to Yuki after he won the Taipei challenger. He doesn't have much to defend in the first 4 months and he's going to start off around #110. He should balance the point collection along with his fitness and form and not put too much strain on his body. Fortunately the first two months have tournaments within Asia including the Chennai challenger.

Tough Opening rounds for Arjun & Sid in the AO play off
Arjun faces 7th seed Renta Tokuda & Siddharth faces 2 seed Zhang Ze
Should they cause upsets in the opener , Duck Hee Lee & Di Wu await them in R2

Pranjala takes on the Qualifier Mana Ayukawa (JPN, 422) in the Womens Singles First round. Third seed Fang Ying Xun of China awaits her in the next round should she cross the first hurdle.

In the Mens doubles, Balaji(110)/Arjun(168) get a bye in R1 and in QF, they meet the Chinese pair of Rigele Te(414) and Di Wu (247). Should they win their QF match, thet would potentially face the top seed Chinese pair of Mao-Xin Gong and Zhang Ze in the SF.

Mann Shah is the Top seed in the Boys Singles and he has a bye in R1.

Phew!! Yuki, RamK, Prajnesh, Sumit, Saketh are all skipping the AO wildcard playoff! What is wrong with Indian tennis players :damn: Truly asinine of Saketh and Sumit to pull out unless they are injured. Prajnesh is somewhat understandable (especially since he has a slight injury now).

I am also very irritated that Ankita Raina and Karman are skipping this.

I give Prajnesh a pass given his recent exploits. Fir the rest of them, it is completely asinine.

Sid's match commence in some time on the Centre Court
An interesting entry in the line up is that of Colin Sinclair from some obscure Pacific archipelago territory, Northern Mariana Islands, and he has made a stunning shocking start and is up 5-1 in the first set against the home favourite and fancied Chinese Di Wu and now takes the first set 6-2.
Very interesting indeed ........
