Just to emphasise how bad Sowjanya's loss yesterday was, Zeel double bagels Cai today and reaches the SF. So Dinesh was right after all that we would have an Indian in SF.

[QF] (5) Zeel DESAI (IND,683) d. (Q) Xinyu CAI (CHN,NR) 6-0 6-0

Next up,

[SF] (5) Zeel DESAI (IND,683) vs (3) Nudnida LUANGNAM (THA, 606)

I do not want to be disrespectful to Sowjanya, but I watched the last 2 games of her match yesterday. The quality was so poor, I felt as if I were watching a local club match. I had never watched her play before, so I am not sure if she was hampered by an injury or if it was lack of fitness, but the level of play from both players was utterly shocking.

Zeel and her Thai partner Thamachaiwat have reached the doubles final too.

Zeel looks in good form this week but will be tested in SF by Thai veteran. 31 year old Luangnam is a former top 200 player but has not done much of note of late.

Zeel's SF match starts in a few minutes (streamed live on the ITF live streaming site).

Good opportunity for Zeel to pull off an upset. Nudnida Luangnam reached a career high of 195 in 2013 (close to where Ankita Raina is now) but lost in Q1 of all the Slams that year. She hasn't done much in the past year, and lost to Prerna Bhambri a couple of months ago. So a good chance for Zeel to pick up a decent scalp.

But not a good start for Zeel. She lost the first set 4-6.

Rapidly downhill for Zeel now. She has been broken twice in the second set, and trails 4-6, 0-3.

Zeel got outplayed.

[SF] (5) Zeel DESAI (IND,683) l. (3) Nudnida LUANGNAM (THA, 606) 46 06

First time watched Zeel play after Australian open juniors in 2017. Frankly, there did not seem much improvement in her game from that. Luangnam was a much more consistent player and Zeel did not have the power or the placements to beat a retriever like Luangnam.

Zeel was leading 3-1 in the first set, what a shame! Does she have a coach at all?

I think Zeel is being coached by Australian Todd Clarke who coaches in Ahemedabad Tennis academy. There is a recent photograph ( of last month ) on his fb page of him there with Zeel with Nick Bolletierie (probably at his academy). Perhaps Zeel had a stint there but did not see any improvement in her game at least today.

She did win the doubles title through with her Thai partner Thamachaiwat.

Has any of our players ever really benefited from coaching or advice from Nick Bollitieri? Nobody really comes to mind, though quite a few have taken pictures with him and all that....

I think Yuki's early training stints were there. Seems like he has moved on and done really well with his Thailand based training more recently...

^^^ Yes, Yuki's was there, and that was what I was making a hidden hint at. I don't think that stint showed any benefit then. I felt he got better after he moved on.... Maybe I am wrong.
