French Open 2018

Post by PKBasu »

Yuki Bhambri will be in the main draw of the French Open (he is 84th on the list of acceptances below):

https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/arti ... ns-singles

Wonderful that an Indian is in the singles main draw after several years.
Ramkumar, Sumit and (with a bit of luck) Prajnesh should be in the men's qualifying draw, while Ankita Raina will be in the women's singles draw.

Yes, great to see an Indian in the singles draw of French open. Last Indian to play in singles there was Somdev in 2014. Somdev played French open main draw 4 times between 2010 to 2014 (missing only one in between due to injury). Sania played French open singles main draw 5 times between 2005 to 2011. Somdev could win a round in main draw only once in his 4 attempts while Sania could win a round twice in her 5 attempts. So, they did not have much success there. Not expecting much from Yuki too but glad that at least he gets to play a grand slam main draw other than Australian open for the first time.

Any idea anyone what has been the best singles performance by an Indian at French open ?

Sameer, I think Ramanathan Krishnan - quarter final in 1962.

An Indian born British ICS officer who represented India in Davis Cup and Olympics reached the semis in 1925. Quite a few Indians have made the 4th round.

In the Open era, the best performances by Indians are Premjit Lall (1969), Vijay Amritraj (1974) and Ramesh Krishnan (1982) making R3 of the French Open; just that one occasion for each of them. Not their favourite Slam!

Jaidip Mukerjea made R4 of the French championship in 1965 and 1966 (just before the Open era). Dilip Bose made the last-16 (although it was then only the third round) at Roland Garros in 1948. Ghaus Mohammad made R3 in 1939.

Krishnan reached the 4th round again in 1965 the same year he won the big River Oaks tournament. So on India's least favourite surface we had 2 players in the last 16. Also pre-war in 1927 Sri Krishna Prasad reached the 4th round. Vijay hardly played the French Open not because he disliked clay but because there was some dispute between WCT players and the French Open.

So, we are assured of having one Indian in the men's singles draw (Yuki) and THREE Indians in the men's singles qualifiers (Ramkumar, likely to be seeded, Prajnesh and Sumit). Plus one Indian (Ankita) in the women's singles qualifiers. We will have to be alert and following the action avidly here!

Yes, this will probably be the largest contingent we will be having in singles at French open for a while.

Further, RamK, Prajnesh and Sumit are all quite accomplished on clay and will be playing a lot on the surface before the FO qualies. So, we can hope that one of them makes a big run to the main draw here.

And then Wimbledon! I can't wait to see Yuki and RamK storming through the main draw on the hallowed grass of the Big W!

If Ramkumar qualifies into the FO main draw, he will almost certainly be top-100, and his points from Antalya will probably get him into the main draw of Wimbledon. What a year this is turning out to be!

Nope, French open points will not help him for getting into Wimbledon main draw, it will be too late. He will have to do something in next 3 weeks at Istanbul,Madrid or Rome. But, looks difficult as he will need around 140 points to get close top 100 which is needed for Wimbledon main draw.

OK, but then he will do something special at Istanbul (this week), Madrid or Rome :-)

Being among the seeds in a Masters qualifying draw can be quite a boon, as Yuki showed at Indian Wells and Key Biscayne. So Rome or Madrid will be where he could maximise his points haul...

I think Sumit already made it to the qualies draw due to withdrawals by Andy Murray and Stebe from the main draw.

Also, Ankita made the qualies cut in the initial list itself.

These are the last few acceptances in the qualifying draw.
83 191 Perrin, Conny
84 192 Von Deichmann, Kathinka
85 193 Raina, Ankita
86 194 Di Lorenzo, Francesca
87 195 Schoofs, Bibiane
88 196 Karatantcheva, Sesil

There was a slight update in the qualies entry list, as MTF seemed to have missed out on two entries. So Sumit is two out of the draw now!
