$2.6 Million Dubai Duty Free Championships 2018

Post by sameerph »

As put in the Yuki's thread both Yuki and Sumit are playing qualifying tomorrow. Rohan is certainly there in the doubles entry list. Divij/Lipsky, Leander/Purav were 2-3 out from main draw. Lets see if they get in there.

[Q1] (2) Yuki Bhambri (IND,101) vs. (WC) Ivan Dodig (CRO,402)

[Q1] Sumit Nagal (IND,216) vs. (4) Blaz Kavcic (SLO,109)

Dodig hardly plays any singles these days. So, he will much better than his ranking of 402. Still, a match-up which Yuki would have taken for Q1.

Sumit had beaten Kavic in Bangalore challenger. Lets see if he can repeat that.

Sumit is ranked 216 at the moment; he hasn't leap-frogged to 109 :D

Dodig hardly plays much singles now, and at 33 shouldn't be too much of a challenge for Yuki. But Dodig has a career high singles ranking of 29 from just over 4 years ago, so he has solid singles credentials. As long as Yuki doesn't allow the mental demons (that got him against Baghdatis at the AO), he should win Q1. Stefano Travaglia (ITA, 129) or Egypt's Maamoun await in Q2. One win earns 10 ATP points and US$4300.

Sumit too has a good chance (if he is playing his best) against Kavcic. He could play Rajeev Ram in Q2, after the latter (who has officially retired from singles) took a wildcard here.

He will be playing either Galovic(CRO,183) or Maden(GER,142) if he wins Q1.

Sam, you pessimist. You need to be locked in a room with PKB so that some of his eternal optimism sticks on you. :D

Dodig last played a singles qualifier at Beijing last October, retiring against Polansky at 1-set all (64 57 retd). Of course, Yuki has beaten Polansky the last two times they played. Dodig is usually strong in the first set, but can't sustain it. He did however make the singles SF in his home tournament at Umag (Croatia) in July 2017, upsetting Goffin in the QF before losing to Rublev. So definitely not a pushover in singles, despite the rust in his game and lungs.

Yuki leads 5-2 now. He broke Dodig in the sixth game, then saved a break point at 30-40 before holding after a single deuce.

Rajeev lost the first set 2-6.
