Re: North American ATP tournaments Feb-March 2018
Thank you for the highlights, Samarth.
To call out though - Ram was primarily a Futures level player (with win/loss record in challengers around ~40%) till mid-last year and its only been like 6-8 months since he has made that transition. Expecting him to make that next big jump (from 120-160 rank to 80-120 bucket) would be a bit tough when he hasn't even really established on the higher echelon Challenger level yet (established in my opinion = >60% win-loss record).
I would have generally thought that he would need 2-3 years to get used to this new standard and gradually move up to the 80-120 bucket around 24-25 age. However, his association with Casal (?) seems to be fast tracking that progression. My naive observation shows that he has already moved from non-existent backhand (apart from slice) to a weak backhand which he can use to hang-in the rally quite often but not good enough to force errors as often yet.
He has only changed his approach from the last year of playing Futures when he was in points trouble to playing Tennis in ATP events which one would think is more appropriate for Yuki (and say Ram an year or two later). Given the strong backing he seems to enjoy from both Casal / Mahesh, I hope he retains his top-160 ranking this year while playing in the more challenging events.
Also hope that he enters the Clay season sooner than later. He seems to have forgotten his point building skill in favor of a good serve/volley game over the last year (or atleast I would assume so, if all he did in the past was play in the European Clay Circuit)

Re: North American ATP tournaments Feb-March 2018
Paes/Raja vs Sock/Withrow has started. LP came back from 15-40 in their 1st service game to hold.
http://live.livewidget.net/streamvideo1 ... 95172.html
3-5 one break of Raja's serve. Haven't had a look in on their serve so far.
3-6 not able to get their returns going at all.
0-1 LP broken to 30 on a DF. 3 screaming return winners from the Americans to set up the break points.
1-4 LP broken to 30. Winners again from the Americans and a df from LP. Just no magic today. Both have been very flat.
2-4 finally break Withrow to 30 with some good all round play
2-5 Purav broken to love. Americans have served better and returned better.
[R1] Leander Paes (IND)/ Purav Raja (IND) lost to Jack Sock (USA)/ Jackson Withrow (USA) 3-6, 2-6

Wow! That's an impressive win against a team that has had more experience playing together. Go Divij!!!
Up next, it's either the 3rd seeds McLachlan/Nys or Treat Huey/Steve Johnson. I fancy the latter's chances more in this R1 match.

Re: North American ATP tournaments Feb-March 2018
The Indian Wells Masters begins today with the qualifiers. There are 12 slots (in a draw of 96) available to qualifiers, so Yuki will definitely be seeded in the qualifiers (he is 10th on the entry list). RamK will also be in the qualifying rounds at this Masters event.

Re: North American ATP tournaments Feb-March 2018
Looks like the mens qualifying will only start on Tuesday. There will be 24 seeds in qualies. Yuki likely to be among top 12 seeds and RamK among 13-24 seeds. Hope they get a good draw.

Re: North American ATP tournaments Feb-March 2018
Strange that they don’t announce the qualifying draw until a few hours before the matches start.
If the women’s qualifying draw is anything to go by, there are 48 slots in qualifying, and announcing 24 seeds eliminates the possibility of seeds meeting each other in Q1. Barring accidents, Yuki should have a good chance of qualifying, and RamK will need one upset victory to qualify.
12 qualifiers will each take one of the 64 slots in R1, with 32 players getting byes to R2. This offers a fairly good opportunity for qualifiers to win a round in the main draw too.
