Post by sameerph »

4 weeks of usual high level junior circuit tournaments begin this week with a grade 3 in Chandigarh. That will be followed by 2 grade 2 tournaments in Delhi, Kolkata and finally a grade 5 in Indore. It looks like Kolkata tournament has got upgraded to grade 2 which is good for Indian players.

Disappointing that there’s just a solitary Indian in the SF of boys and girls at a Grade-3 event in India. Akanksha Bhan’s loss particularly so.

Overall 5 Indians in the second round.

Akanksha lost in the semi final.

Selin OVUNC (TUR) [4] 6-1 2-6 7-6(3) Akanksha A BHAN (IND) [1]

So far disappointing stuff from our juniors in this series with none making to the final any of the first 2 weeks.

There’s a Grade 2 event in Kolkata, starting tomorrow. I was at South Club this morning (actually meeting a nephew and grandnephew of Netaji’s, whose family home overlooked South Club, and made them lifelong tennis fans) —and watched 3rd seed Brandon Perez of Venezuela practicing on the clay courts there. He is a typical clay courier. His manager didn’t know about the grass courts, and was mighty impressed when I showed them to him.

That the junior #124 is only seeded third suggests the quality of the event.

Unfortunately I had too much work in Kolkata today, so couldn't watch any of the action (although the DKS is very close to my parent's home). Here are the results of the boys' singles:

Yassir KILANI (MAR) [1] 7-5 6-4 Sandeep VM (IND)
Gauthier ONCLIN (BEL) 7-6(1) 6-4 Rithvik Choudary BOLLIPALLI (IND)
Pengyu LU (CHN) 6-1 7-5 Divesh GAHLOT (IND)
Abhimanyu VANNEMREDDY (IND, 177) [7] 1-6 6-4 7-6(2) Terence ATMANE (FRA)
Minjong PARK (KOR) [4] 6-2 6-2 ADITYA VARDHAN ROY CHOWDHURY (IND)
Michal WOZNIAK (POL) 6-2 6-1 Karthik Singh PANWAR (IND)
Nikit REDDY (USA) 4-6 6-1 6-1 Siddharth THAKRAN (IND)
Soufiane EL MESBAHI (MAR) 2-6 6-1 6-1 Rishabh SHARDA (IND) [6]
Louis HERMAN (BEL) [8] 6-3 6-1 srivatsa RATAKONDA (IND)
Karan SRIVASTAVA (IND, 204) 5-7 6-1 6-2 Xinmu ZHOU (CHN, 218)
Younes LALAMI LAAROUSSI (MAR) 6-1 6-3 Yash CHAURASIA (IND)
Brandon PEREZ (VEN) [3] 1-6 6-1 6-4 Naithaolin Calvin GOLMEI (IND)
Eric VANSHELBOIM (UKR) [5] 7-6(5) 6-2 Neel RAJESH (USA)
Theo VANDEWEGHE (BEL) 7-5 6-4 Anurag AGARWAL (IND)
Dev JAVIA (IND, 209) 2-6 6-4 6-1 Dong Ju KIM (KOR, 203)
Mathys ERHARD (FRA) 4-6 6-3 7-6(5) Sacchitt SHARRMA (IND) [2]

So, disappointment for the highest-ranked Indian (in a very close match), but a few nice wins for the Indians in a field of closely-ranked players.

Second round results for boys -

Yassir KILANI (MAR) [1] 6-3 7-5 Gauthier ONCLIN (BEL)
Pengyu LU (CHN) 1-6 7-6(4) 6-1 Abhimanyu VANNEMREDDY (IND) [7]
Michal WOZNIAK (POL) 6-2 6-0 Minjong PARK (KOR) [4]
Soufiane EL MESBAHI (MAR) 6-3 7-6(4) Nikit REDDY (USA)
Louis HERMAN (BEL) [8] 6-3 6-4 Karan SRIVASTAVA (IND)
Younes LALAMI LAAROUSSI (MAR) 4-6 6-3 6-4 Brandon PEREZ (VEN) [3]
Eric VANSHELBOIM (UKR) [5] 6-3 6-1 Theo VANDEWEGHE (BEL)
Mathys ERHARD (FRA) 6-3 4-6 6-0 Dev JAVIA (IND)

So, Indian challenge ended in second round itself. :-(

So, in 3 weeks only 1 Indian boy, Sachhit Sharma could get to the SF in first week. I think these are the worse results we have got in these series of tournaments for a few year. Part of it can be explained by much more competitive field. Also our top 5 junior boys are not playing here ( Siddhanth Banthia, Megh Bhargav Patel, Adil Kalyanpur, Digivijay Pratap Singh and Vikash Singh). So, the next level was not able to raise their game and take advantage of home conditions.

My ray of hope in this is 15 year old Dev Javia who has won some very good matches here but has failed to show consistently to win multiple matches. Hope he will improve enough during the year to challenge for titles at this level next year.

A bit surprising that the top-5 Indians are not playing a Grade-2 tournament in India. The field is strong enough for this level of tournament. Dev Javia is promising, and he beat a 15 year old Korean in R1, which was even more pleasing.
