LP was 19 yrs and 6 months when he crossed into top-250, which was 25 years ago. Yuki was 19 and 10 months when he did that. RamK was 19 and 11 months. Sumit is right behind them, at 20 and 4 months.

Had anybody had told me 10 years ago, when we had not produced even a single top-200 player in 15 years that we would produce five top-150 quality players by now, and two of them (Somdev and Yuki) would be in the top-100 within a few years, I would have totally fainted.

Unfortunately, Sumit got injured early this year and missed first 5 months this year. Else, I think he too would have got to top 250 about 4-5 months earlier at similar age like Yuki. I think he is as at least much a talent as Yuki, better than RamK ( who has to work on his weak backhand).

One for PKB and the other eternal optimists in here - any chance of Sumit making the net gen finals in 2018 :D ? Zverev did not play this year and Rublev and Shapovalov may join him if they continue to progress. Sumit has also played the least number of tournaments of anyone in the list.

4 Alexander Zverev
39 Andrey Rublev
51 Denis Shapovalov
79 Frances Tiafoe
91 Stefanos Tsitsipas
105 Taylor Fritz
116 Alexander Bublik
140 Casper Ruud
144 Akira Santillan
151 Tommy Paul
155 Corentin Moutet
161 Felix Auger-Aliassime
167 Stefan Kozlov
168 Soonwoo Kwon
175 Michael Mmoh
181 Carlos Taberner
202 Jaume Munar
207 Miomir Kecmanovic
208 Alex De Minaur
217 Duckhee Lee
220 Jay Clarke
225 Sumit Nagal
230 Reilly Opelka
237 Hubert Hurkacz
241 Nicola Kuhn

Terrific win, he suddenly woke after a break down in the third and raised his game for securing his first challenger title ... More importantly, he also secure his place in Australian open qualifying.

ATP has taken notice of what is going on in India. A nice article came up today on the challenger front page - India Builds Momentum With Challenger Success by Josh Meiseles, with some great pictures.

Sumit has nis next set of points to defend only on 11th June 2018. This falls after qualifying cut off date for 2018 Wimbledon. So, effectively he has secured entry into qualies of First 3 slams of next year. :D

Of course finger crossed that he remains fit now. He can only go up in that case till mid next year.

This is great stuff from Sumit.Looking at future India #1 ( near future I would say). I saw his potential a while back and quickly realized he could model his game on Ferrer. I was a bit concerned he may have peaked too early against Yuki - glad he came out of the slump after the second set and found that third wind!

A real champion in the making - finally I see the beginnings of a great DC team that will bring the Cup to India. :-)

Sumit or not Sumit? Was that even a question???

Very good win, indeed!

Looks like there's a Canadian connection in Sumit's development. It looks like he's spent a fair bit of time in Toronto over the past few years training at the Rexall Centre at York University. And he's practised with Raonic and the rest of the Canadian Davis Cup team.

Sumit's game seems to have a pretty solid foundation in most aspects. Looking forward to his continued development. I hope comparisons to other NextGen and Indian players are kept to a minimum. They serves no useful purpose in predicting Sumit's development and growth, and can add unnecessary pressure. Players develop at different rates and stages. It's never linear. And there are a lot of variables. As long as he keeps improving in all aspects at his optimum rate while staying healthy, I'm happy.

He should now go and play wildcard playoff and win it to make it a direct entry into the slam that will be some sensational stuff

Was at the stadium. Tremendous crowd to support our lad. 2000 people roughly. What fight. What a lad. When he controlled the point with his forehand, he won most of them. Needs to improve that backhand and serve. Serve more so.

Way to go Sumi! The QF and SF wins were awesome, dominating and commendable.... :notworthy:
Watched most of the final and found that he could improve his serve, overheads and handling short balls - in that order...
That monstrous inside out FH return is a killer and he unleashes it mostly at a break point.... :D

Now, go get the AO main draw WC this week.... :goodluck:
