[R2] (15) Zeel DESAI (IND,18) vs. Marta PAIGINA (RUS,176)

[R2] Mahak JAIN (IND,29) vs. (3) Claire LIU (USA,2)

Very tough matches for both. Liu won the grade 1 title in Roehampton last week and Paigina is ranked 351 in WTA rankings and has already won 9 ITF titles.

Why is Paigina ranked 176 then? Seems odd. Must be her last junior ranking?

Because she did not play much in juniors in last 1 year. She reached SF at French open juniors this year when she lost in the SF to Liu who is playing Mahak. Looking at that, it will be a miracle of sorts if any of our girls pulls off a win here.

This is a flaw in the junior ranking. Unless they want to discourage ITF play at all, they should include at least some ITF futures points in the junior rankings to get a better ranking system.

I thought a slam semi would have added so many points even if she hadn't played at the junior level for a year that her ranking would be much better than 176. Strange system.

Mahek lost it in straight sets 2-6, 1-6 against second seed Lui.
Zeel reached 3rd Round as Paigina retired after winning the first set 7-5 and down 0-1 in second (but having 3 BP's on zeel serve), there was rain interruption and she didn't continue with the match after that.
Zeel is expected to face top seed in 3rd Round :goodluck:

Zeel had broken her opponent at the start of the second set, and had fought her hard in the first -- which must have contributed to the fatigue that led her to retire. So not entirely a matter of luck!

A higher ranked (351) player fatigued and retired after winning a set, because her opponent fought hard? She must have been injured, clearly. To her credit, Zeel stayed the course with luck favoring her in the end. Of all the future generation girls, I really like Zeel and Karman for their fighting qualities and never say die attitude.

Zeel's potential opponents couldn't finish their R2 match today. The top seed won the first set 6-2, but down a break in the second at 1-3. Let's hope that the other girl takes this set and they fight tooth and nail in the decider. They have to finish this match and play Zeel on the same court right after another girls' match. With Zeel having played just about 13 games today, she should feel a lot more fresher tomorrow compared to a worn out opponent.

Zeel has the ability to raise her game to very high levels and wont be surprised if she can get past the the top seed or her conqueror.

Any updates on our mixed doubles specialists?

In junior girls top seed American Kyla Dey won her match. So, she will meet Zeel shortly on court 16.
