2017 Chennai Open

Post by PKBasu »

I know it's a bit premature to start this, but an international journalist friend of mine says that Wawrinka will not be coming to Chennai this year (he is going to Brisbane instead apparently…). If anybody hears any early news about the entry list at Chennai, please post it here!

That is old news actually. The organizers said that at least one out of Cilic/del Potro are going to make it to the event. Hope del Potro comes.

He has been a good brand ambassador for us. Though Cilic is not of the same level, he will be a good attraction. Del Porto, if he comes will be awesome.

Maran Cilic is now confirmed to be coming for Chennai open. No news about Del Potro.

I think entry list will come out in couple of days.

Yes, Del Potro has not entered Doha and Brisbane. So, he seems to have kept the door open to play Chennai.

Others top 20 players who have not entered anywhere are Gael Monfils, Roger Federer and Richard Gasquet. I doubt if Chennai can lure any of them.

Let's get Federer. He can still bring in the crowds!

Yes, Federer can certainly bring in more crowd than anyone else in the past. Monfils isn't bad either. Cilic, though ranked very high, is not that big a crowd puller. Stan was like that too, but his multiple titles made him a favorite at Chennai. He should have considered Chennai for sentimental/superstitious reasons, for he always did better at Australian Open :D. Del Potro will certainly sell more tickets than anyone currently in the entry list.

The MD and the Alts list would more or less remain the same , thus making the Qualies having a very strong field ,
and with this line up it would be difficult for any of the Indians to qualify.

Is that a segue to the wild wildcard discussion Rajiv?

Thanks,Vatsal. I did not check that. Richard Gasquet is also playing Hopmans cup. So, he is out of contention too. So, the only top 20 player left is Monfils.

It will be great if they can lure either of Monfils or Del Potro.
