Purav-Divij can handle the Chinese and there is no need to roll the dice on this. We absolutely MUST plan to win the doubles match, because we can't be sure of winning 3 singles matches against anybody decent.

The problem is that neither MB nor LP has ever shown an understanding of the importance of having enough doubles matches together. All through their own history. They both seem to think that good doubles players could just walk in with anybody and win doubles matches. Even they themselves have not individually managed to do that always, and every time they tried to do that together by walking in and playing with each other at top events, they failed (except in Davis Cup though they were against easier opponents). But that never stopped them from trying it at multiple Olympics and repeatedly coming up empty. Still their opinions never changed on enough mach practice together for a doubles team. I don't think MB feels like we do, that a regular team is a serious advantage. Maybe he is even somewhat right if we are playing against the top-10 type Davis Cup teams, when we anyway have to hope/pray for some super show from Bops (who is occasionally capable of that, but doesn't come through often enough) or a big-serving singles player playing with him... But against lower teams, a regular good-quality team can win the doubles match and give us a big leg up. Divij-Puav for sure against the Chinas of the world. I hope MB will look at this the right way, and will listen to Varma.
I agree overall with this assessment..Purav/Divij seems to be all we have at the moment and even though they have split up to play with other partners, they have played together sufficient times to have the kind of understanding needed to win doubles. There was at least one point in the recent Canadian encounter where Bops was expecting Purav to poach and put away and when it didnt happen, on his serve, he had to react at the last moment with a very poor volley. At least one hopes that these kinds of failings wont happen with an experienced team that have played with each other for a long time. I am not a great fan of Purav - but the combo with Divij may be better than the sum of its parts.

I too hope MB gets this - of all people he should know - as you say Jay, if MB does not get this even after such a long career then he is not going to listen to you or me..lets just hope and pray he chooses Purav/Divij next time. Bops/Purav is definitely a non-starter.

Now they finally changed the format... At least for the Zonal ties...

5 players in the team... Which might lead to quite interesting options for us...

BUT: best of three, two-day format (starting with the doubles on Day 2)

In World Group, 5th match dead rubber will no longer be played... Which means Day 3 may just have a boring two-setter in worst case... :damn:

Makes it really unattractive to travel to far-away ties...

Just our luck for this format to come into play when we don't have a strong doubles pairing because I would say it rules out the singles players from playing doubles.

And the necessity of one of the doubles players to be good at singles also goes away. The teams can go in with their best doubles team and 3 best singles players. We need to now ensure that we have a doubles team which is playing on the main/challenger tour regularly. That team should get picked for the davis cup tie.

This is the problem. Who is our best doubles team? Rohan-Purav? Purav-Divij? RB-LP? RB-singles-player?

Yes, that is the problem. But, there was another problem. Mahesh and many of us felt that one of the doubles players also needed to be good enough to substitute one of the singles players in case of necessity. That necessity will no longer be there in the new format. Now, we only need to figure out who is our best doubles pair. :D

Given his injury issues, I wonder if Yuki should seriously consider transitioning to becoming a doubles player over the next couple of years. I think he has top-20 doubles potential if he chooses that path. Of course, his doubles ranking is quite low now but he could use his singles ranking to enter doubles events at challenger level tournaments (perhaps as a semi-regular partner for Divij) until he can get his doubles ranking up sufficiently.

I recall LP in 1998-99 suddenly switching to doubles when he was around 25-26 and in the top-100 in singles having made the 3rd round at the US Open in singles. Of course, his doubles rise in 1999 was meteoric which made the transition very easy.

If yuki/divij starts to do well, we may have a doubles solution here.

It's a bit premature for Yuki to start thinking of himself as a doubles player. We need him to play singles for us at the moment!

True, he is still our best singles player. So, from the team standpoint too, it makes more sense for him to concentrate on getting those 2 points in singles rather than trying to get a point in doubles which we can get without him too.

China has announced a strong team led by No. 181 Zhang Ze, Wu Di, Wu Yibing, Gao Xin and Gong Maoxin and will take on NZ led by No. 308 Jose Stathum, alongside doubles specialists Michael Venus, Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak - ranked No. 15, 38 and 53 in the doubles.

Barring the doubles , Chinese seems to be favourites to face India
