Sameer, in my view this is not ' a bit surprising' but big (adding 'g' instead of 't') upset considering Karman's recent form ...

I knew this was going to be a tough match, but am still surprised that Karman lost.
Rutuja had a career high of 527 four years ago (before going off to college at Texas A&M). She has been doing reasonably well in college tennis (I recall she was the conference player of the week at least once), so her game may well have improved further in the past 3+ years of college tennis in the US. Let us hope she can win another round or two in this tough field.

And couple of years back playing same series of tournaments, Rutuja beat a player ranked close to 300 and another one in top 500. So, she would not be too much below the current level of Karman considering improvement in last 2 years.
So, I would call it a mild upset not a big one.

Ankita is such a fighter. She defeats the 3rd seed Perrin in 3 sets. Wow!

Fabulous win from Ankita!!
[R1] Ankita RAINA (IND,271) d. (3) Conny PERRIN (SUI,181) 60 46 61
Winning two sets 60 61 against world #181 is fantastic, even if she suffered a hiccup in between!
Beating the 3rd seed also opens up the draw for her.

Yeah. Ankita never seems to be able to make the big run anywhere these days. Disappointing!

Re: Maharashtra ITF Women tournaments Oct 16-Jan 17
Yes, this year Ankita has shown some ability to beat players inside and just outside top 200 which she had not shown earlier. But, she has failed to go deep in tournaments which has hurt her. Today's loss is particularly disappointing after a big win yesterday.

Re: Maharashtra ITF Women tournaments Oct 16-Jan 17
Yes, Ankita is rarely able to able to follow-up a big upset win with a routine win the next day. This restricts the upward momentum in her ranking.
But she and Lu are in the doubles SF with a 75 61 win over the third seeds.
