I completely agree with PKB on use of "Kolkata". Utter shame.

I use Kolkata effortlessly while speaking bengali and I am absolutely fine using Calcutta while in conversion in english. The entire name change was nothing but a hype to cover for years of government apathy.

Btw there was a request to change the name of the state from west bengal to bangla but somehow it didn't happen.

:Offtopic: Back in Singapore now, Vatsal! I left on 26th night. Played against the markers at Tollygunge Club almost every day that I was there: always a very tough work-out.

Also Bala has accepted a wildcard for the qualifiers of Fenesta. Maybe a late entry here. Makes the mens side more competitive

jayakris wrote:Oh, I didn't know that there was an "i" in the Bengali name for Calcutta. By the way, "Bengal" is a wrong spelling too, am I right? It should be closer to Bangal or Bongal or something? Like in the "Banga" in the national anthem (or "Vanga" as I had always seen in sanskrit works)
The formal names are Kolikata and Poschim Bongo. Now the commonly spoken terms are Kolkata and Bangla (or Poschim Bangla).

Some people may not have heard of Kolkata and so when I speak to them, I use Calcutta. Otherwise, I use Kolkata.

Bala is not a wild card here but playing qualifying. Surprising considering that he needs to to improve his ranking from 400+ where it has fallen now.

On mens side only 2 of the top 10 players ( Bala and Vishnu) are there in the fray while a much more competitive field where 5 of India's top 7 players are playing here ( except Ankita Raina and Natasha Palha). Not surprising considering that mens top 10 consist of many challenger level players while in women everyone barring Ankita is ranked below top 500.
