Guys, anyone from SI going? I bought some ground passes a few weeks ago for the opening day (Aug 31). Let me know if anyone from SI is going to be there. Hoping to get a glimpse of Nadal, my son's idol.

2009 U.S. Open
Just saw that Rajeev Ram received a maindraw wildcard into this year's U.S. Open. Also, the current NCAA champ, Devin Britton gets a wildcard into the main draw. I believe this is the first time since 2003 when Amer Delic was the champion that the NCAA champ is getting a maindraw WC. Of course, except for this year, the last 5 winners have all been non-Americans. As we all know, Somdev couldn't even get a WC into qualifying last year.

Re: 2009 U.S. Open
Oh, boy! Somdev's potential R2 opponent is Guillermo Canas. The guy was ranked as high as No.8 in 2005. He was the one who beat Federer twice in succession around this time last year (Indian Wells & Miami...IIRC). Anyway, it's a reality check and Buji has to beat these guys to move high up in the ladder and compete with the big boys. If he can beat an in-form Cilic, he can definitely beat a fading Canas. Being young and also having never played in a slam, Buji should be hungrier than Canas.
I think I am getting too carried away. He got to beat a seeded player in Bogomolov Jr first. Just for records, Buji got better of him in LA last month (7-5, 6-2).
Good luck, Somdev & Prakash!

Re: 2009 U.S. Open
Very tough match-up for Somdev against Canas in Q2. Canas is not the typical Argentine: he is comfortable on all surfaces including grass (has done very well at s'Hertogenbosch almost every year, made R4 at Wimbledon). Before those two successive Masters series victories over Federer in 2007, he had been suspended from the tour for a dope offense. The past year has been a very inconsistent one for him (hence the ranking of 175), but Canas was ranked in the top-20 just two years ago, and will be a formidable opponent. Somdev needs to remember that he beat a current top-20 player last month, so what is a former top-20 player?!

Re: 2009 U.S. Open
Wimbledon is the only Slam that has qualifying rounds for doubles. The only way to get into the doubles draw for other Slams is through rankings (a mix of singles and doubles, I believe) plus the few wildcards on offer (which will go mainly to local-linked pairs).

I wish there was some consistency in the slams in terms of the number of qualifiers and also the format? I guess it's liking asking all baseball fields to be exactly alike in terms of dimensions.PKBasu wrote:Wimbledon is the only Slam that has qualifying rounds for doubles.
