At this age, I’m not sure anything other than ranking should be used as a selection criterion. I mean eye test isn’t a great measure and is subjective. At this age, a kid can play at a totally different level within a month. Holding trials is the only other objective criteria. If the kid has ambition to play for india, and needs AITA support, he’ll be better off meeting their requirements, i.e., get his ranking on the list AITA uses high enough to be selected. Of course, he can go on his own and aim to be a pro and not bother about representing India. When I see under 12, 14, etc., I get repulsed anyway. There is no place for such age competition in my book. Find other ways to groom them and let kids be kids.

Our girls beat Thailand 2-0 today, and will play for the 5th/6th spots in Asia next. Harithashree beat Jinnipa Trachoovanich, 26 61 62 and Maaya beat Tarita Hongsyok, 64 63.

Looks like we have to beat Hong Kong once more to finish 5th. They were the #2 from our pool who made the QF. They lost to Australia but then beat Uzbekistan 2-1 in 5-thru-8 bracket SF. In the 1-thru-4 bracket SFs, Japan and Korea beat Australia and Kazakhstan.

We beat Hongkong 2-0 again to finish 5th overall. In third place match, Australia easily beat Kazakhstan. So, Japan, Korea and Australia were the 3 teams which qualified. And it looks like even if we had somehow beaten Kazakhstan, top 3 team would have been the same.

Our team was decent but not really great.

On to under 14 boys next week.

Bad start for our under 14 boys. They lost to Taiwan 0-3 today in first group match.

Taiwan is not even seeded and we did not even win a set against them. We were the seeded team in our group along with Hongkong. So, the way we lost to Hongkong better not to keep any hopes from this team.

Not surprising considering at least the top 2 from this age group are not in the team- Tavish Pahwa as Kamesh pointed out in his article and Vihaan Reddy who has been dominating against 16 year olds in last 3 weeks.

If AITA was any serious about winning in these tournaments, it would have requested Vihaan to skip the third week of current ITF junior series and join this team and also take action based on article that Kamesh wrote about Tavish. Too much to expect AITA to do these kind of things though.

I don’t think that there is much prestige with winning these early age group events. Primary benefit is development opportunities for the players in playing against other top players in their age group. If Vihaan or Manas are getting sufficient competitive opportunities at the right level than these tournaments aren’t as important.

One benefit would be for these players to have some publicity in press saying they are selected to play for India. I have seen such articles in press for being selected in these junior teams.

But, I was more saying from AITA point of view. They would certainly want their team to win and for that it is in their interest that best available team is selected.

Btw, today our boys under 14 team beat New Zealand 2-1 with our #1 Shivtej Shirfule winning his match and us winning the doubles match And in our group Hongkong beat Taiwan 2-1.

So, we have key match against Hongkong tomorrow. If we somehow beat them there will be a 3 way tie between us, Hongkong and Taiwan.
But, that looks tough as Hongkong had better results than us in first 2 days.

Our under 14 boys lost 0-3 to Hongkong. So, that is it for them. And to make it worse they lost we lost 0-2 against Iran of all teams in 9-16 playoff. This was really a poor team it seems.

And Pakistan first qualified for QF from their group and today upset Australia to make it to SF. So, if there are 4 teams qualifying for world group, it seems a rare occasion where Pakistan has qualified for world group and India is out.

Japan, Korea and Hongkong were other 3 teams who made it to the SF.

Yeah, this was an extremely poor team. I don't remember India ever finishing in the bottom 1/4th below top twelve teams in Asia. As PKB said, AITA keeps "plumbing new depths". :damn:

Now we have started to lose to even Iran in tennis. Or "to Iran even in tennis".

And congratulations to Pakistan for finally having a couple of talented kids after some 25 years since Aisam.

Losing to Iran can’t be put on AITA alone. Just like making the semifinals can’t be attributed to PITA alone.

We won against Kyrgyzstan but lost against Uzbekistan to finish 14th among 16 nations. Absolutely pathetic show.

Pakistan beats Hongkong too to reach the final before losing to Japan for mostly their best ever finish in these age group competitions.

Couple of tweets from AITA about team selections of Junior BJK Cup and Juniors davis cup-

None of these girls are top 3 in their age group if ITF rankings are considered- the top 3 there are Krisha Mahendran, Rishita Reddy Basireddy and Ika Raju Kanumuri. Then there is Sohini Mohanti and then Asmi Adkar at #5.

Other 2 girls are not even in top 10 in their age group as per ITF rankings.

One can predict now that this has no chance.

And this is about junior davis cup team-

Here luckily top 2 are same as top 2 in ITF rankings. Manas and Kriish.

But, team would have been stronger had one of #3 or #4 which are Hitesh Chauhan and Rethin Pranav had been picked. Incredibly #5 in this age group is now 13 year old Vihaan Reddy.

Still this team can be quite good I feel.

Well... You may be on to something there. Maybe not 20 year olds, but...

From this article - World Junior Tennis: Pakistan makes history

You are welcome to make your own conclusions! Both of them are taller than their coach. They don't look like they are quite 20 yet though :) ...

Haniya Minhas in Girls won the Eddie Herr U14 Bronze medal too. The girl is USA based but Pakistan allows dual nationalities and so she will represent Pakistan. She is funded and managed by IMG.

So Pakistan indeed has serious junior talent to look up to.
