No Sania in singles today as well. Prerna comes back for Prarthana.
But, she gets off to a flying start and wins the first set 61 against Uzbek no. 2 Sharipova.

And she completes an impressive win against a higher ranked player.
[S1] Prerna Bhambri (IND,399) d. Sabina Sharipova (UZB,239) 61 61
Ankita up against 217th ranked Nigina Anduraimova next.

And she wins it! What a thrashing victory
S2 Ankita RAINA (307) 6-1 6-0 Nigina ABDURAIMOVA (UZB,217)
Only had Sania won that doubles rubber for us we would have finished the pool in top 2.

Another excellent win by Ankita. She really seems to be really zone playing here. 61 60 thrashing of a player ranked close to 200 is great.
So, we are now tied in terms of matches won with Uzbekistan ( 1 each). Japan has won against us and lost against Uzbeks. They have lost the first match today against Thailand and have lost the first set in the second match.
If they lose against Thailand, it will be a 3 way tie for second to fourth places in our group. I think in that case rubbers won-lost will be the deciding criteria.
Assuming Japan loses the second singles match, this is the scenario as of now -
India 3-5
Uzbekistan 2-6
Japan 3-5
So, it become important for us to win the doubles match today as we might even end up no. 2 in the group if we win that and surely avoid playing in relegation play off.

Sania partnered Ankita and they easily beat the Uzbek pair 62 60 to complete a 3-0 win for us.
According to me, that gets ahead of Uzbekistan based on rubbers won. That would be great as we avoid playing in relegation play off and stay in this group.
Japan won the second singles match coming back from a set down. So, I think what ever happens in the doubles, they will finish ahead of us at second place in group.
Await the confirmation of group placings.

Ok. So, we avoid playing the relegation play off and stay in this group too thanks to some great singles play mainly by Ankita and also by Prerna today.
Only if Sania and Prarthana had won that doubles against Japan, we would have been fighting for third place.
Kazakhstan has 3 top 100 players. So, it will be tough. But, our girls can play freely now that there is no fear of relegation.

It's interesting to see Japan in the promotional play-off despite finishing 2nd in the group behind Thailand.... What am I missing here?
Code: Select all
PROMOTIONAL PLAY-OFF
Japan 0 - 0 Chinese Taipei
3RD TO 4TH PLAY-OFF
Thailand 0 - 0 China, P.R.
5TH TO 6TH PLAY-OFF
India 0 - 0 Kazakhstan
RELEGATION PLAY-OFF
Uzbekistan 0 - 0 Korea, Rep.

It seems that as per fed cup rules, if there is a 2 way tie on points, match result between the 2 teams will be considered first ahead of rubbers won. So, as Japan beat Thailand today, they go ahead.
Topsy turvy results in this group. Uzbekistan who beat Japan on first day find themselves in relagation play off after being thrashed by India.

But the group standings show Thailand topping the group and Japan as #2.... they're making it inconsistent...

Really good performance by Ankita and Prerna against higher ranked Uzbek opponents ... This is turning into breakthrough tournament for Ankita.
