Interesting! On the WTA website, when you want to search by country on rankings, the drop-down list has Taiwan, but the abbreviation beside the player is TPE (Chinese Taipei).

India has pretty good chance here. Can Sania/Shikha do an "LP act" . Go India

No LP act needed. Sania should be favored over Stosur and Shikha has a better than even chance against Pratt who is now on the decline. We would be the underdogs only in dubs....

Sania and Shikha definitely have more talent than the current Aussie team but what I am worried about is that though they have shown the abiility to beat anyone, they have also shown the inconsistency where they can lose to anyone as well.
If Sania or Shikha play inconsistently, the veteran Australians can win the singles. Sometimes veterans play the types of games against young inconsistent players that gives them trouble. I hope that Sania and Shikha can play a solid game and get the wins.

Stosur is a very good player and has tremendous serve. I think Sania will have tough time against her. But Shikha should be able to win against Pratt. Pratt is a defensive players and waits for her opponents to make errors. Let us see how it goes.

India takes 1-0 lead against Aussies
Seoul, April 22 - India has taken a 1-0 lead in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group I qualifying final
Shikha Uberoi def. Casey Dellacqua 6-3 6-2 in one hour, 30 minutes.
Australia draws level with India
Samantha Stosur def. Sania Mirza 6-4 6-2.
(This was the first ever match berween Sam and Sania)
The deciding doubles match will see world No.1-ranked doubles player Stosur and No.6 Rennae Stubbs take on Indian pair Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi.
The odds are in favour of Australia winning the doubles....We really needed Sania to win her singles match

TPE is still Taipei (nothing Chinese about the acronym...).prasen9 wrote:Interesting! On the WTA website, when you want to search by country on rankings, the drop-down list has Taiwan, but the abbreviation beside the player is TPE (Chinese Taipei).

But seriously, we should stop complying with the ludicrous Communist China-imposed term for Taiwan. In common parlance, it is known as Taiwan (and was known as Formosa -- or Beautiful Isle -- when the Portuguese and Dutch controlled it). China was only in control for 4 years (Sept 1945 - Sept 1949), and the Kuomintang took refuge there in October 1949. Only if one accepts the Kuomintang as official rulers of China can there be any justification for calling Taiwan "Chinese" in any sense.

Sad to see Sania lose. Her injuries and niggles are clearly troubling her.
Although we face a very strong doubles pairing, I wouldn't underestimate our own pair. Both Sania and Shikha are excellent doubles players (as is Neha), and the only concern I have is regarding their ability to play together.

its very frustrating....there is no tv coverage....no live scores ANYWHERE!!!
the tennis australia homepage has been updating the news / score after the matches. no live scores anywhere even on australian sites.
looks like fed cup is off the radar....and fed cup site should be voted as the WORST tennis website in the world.

Australia advance 2-1 over India
Australia won the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group I qualifying final today, defeating India 2-1.
Samantha Stosur / Rennae Stubbs def Sania Mirza / Shikha Uberoi 7-6(5) 6-2.
So India goes back to Asia-Oceania Group I for 2007

Fine performance against a very tough pair. Although it is sad that we lost, it is perhaps worth taking a step back to ponder where we stand. Who could have imagined 4-5 years ago that we would be credibly matching Australia in women's tennis? If Sania was fit and at peak form, we probably would have won easily. That thought itself is delicious to me.
