$25K Women's ITF - Mumbai (Nov 1)

Post by jayakris »

Pretty poor field. Only the usual culprits from abroad are coming. Well, when will we see the Uberoi sisters showing up?? .. They were there for Hyderabad WTA but no trips after that. I guess it is alwasy quite expensive to fly to India for just a one week event - that is the big reason for not getting good foreign participation for Indian events.

Jay,
Uberoi sisters would be playing in advanta wta championship in Philadelphia( as was indicated by me in uberoi post) which is at the same time as this one.
I am not sure if Shikha got a wild card or will be playing in qualifying rounds.

Thanks

Good question. She was there for the week before at Pune. Why would she skip this one? ..

Good to see Isha back after a long time. Sania should be the hot favourite for this title. She's come a long way since November last year...

Heard from Megha. She had entered the $10K and the $25K but then withdrew because it seems she has to rest an injury. In fact, she had withdrawn from the doubles at the Lafayette challenger 2 weeks back due to injury (incidentally, Stanciute whom Megs took to three sets there, ended up winning the title). She will be fine, but not sure of the time-frame on when she will play next.

Why has Sania dropped out of the draw? I presume she would now be the top seed (her ranking will be inside top-200 this coming week, I think). Perhaps she is, understandably, seeking bigger challenges now.

I would think she will play the big $75K in Dubai in mid december. Probably that ABN Amro exhibition in Mumbai the week before too, I suppose.

With a relatively weak field, I hope our girls can capitalise fully. Isha, in particular, needs to do well as she is defending her runner-up points from last year. Sadly she has been out of action almost the whole of this year after those heroics 10-12 months ago.

AITA site says,

The following have been given Wild Cards for the the above tournament : -

Main Draw
1) Krushmi Chheda - DOB - 25 May 85
2) Radhika Tulpule - DOB - 9 Feb 82
3) Tara Iyer - DOB - 8 July 88
4) Kakhandaki Shweta - DOB - 3 June 89

Qualifying
The WildCards for the qualifying are left to the organizers

----

Good to see Tara, Radhika and Shweta getting the wildcards. I would have picked 19 yr old Iciri Rai over 19 yr old Krushmi though. After all Iciri beat Krushmi 63 63 just last week in Pune. But Iciri was 2 out from the list when I saw last and might have made it in anyway and that may be why AITA gave it to Krushmi?

Great to see name of Radhika, Tara and Shweta in wild card enterants ... Good break for all these gals ... Yes Jay Iciri should consider for Wild Card ... She is improving tournament by tournament.
