Yes, that's what is amazing about Federer that he is able to keep playing well at such a high level and remain fit for such a long time!!!

Cilic is a proper world #3 now, having made the Wimbledon and AO final -- and of course making the QF at the FO and the final at Queen's. His problem has been the inability to win finals, somewhat repeatedly so. This year, of course, he lost in the SF at the Maharashtra Open too. The run to the 2014 US Open was a rather unique run for him -- a perfect fortnight, perhaps never to be repeated.

I think like Woz, he may get more confident now that he has made multiple finals in the same year, and figure out the little changes he needs at crucial junctures to hang on and win it. Let's see. I don't have much hopes on Waw, Murray, Nadal or Djokovic at the Wimbledon. At the USO, where the courts are slightly slower than at the Aussie and much slower/better-bounce than Wimbledon, the younger guns may be able to do it. At the French someone should be able to do it because the court neutralizes Fed's (or Cilic's) powerful serve.

Federer will likely chicken out and stay away from clay again. Good for him from a mental h2h perspective.

Cilic is as much a true #3 as was Dimitrov before him. Neither of them has shown that they can beat a fully fit big 3(4) at a major.

If the objective is to win as many majors as possible, then Federer's playing clay is meaningless.

Dimitrov has never made the final of a Slam.
Cilic has won a Slam, and he thrashed Federer in the SF while doing so! And Cilic made the final in two of the last three Slams. Didn't he just beat Nadal on the way to this final? (Ah, Nadal wasn't fully fit, but he still chose to play the Australian Open...).

Dimitrov won a masters title and the atp year end tournament in the last 6 months.

Federer was a clear #2 on clay for many number of years. Nadal being a clay monster never gave him even half a chance to get a whole lot of credit he otherwise deserved. Last year it made sense for Fed to not play FO because Nadal was raring to go. This year, with more top players sidelined, he may well give it a try to add to his lone triumph in Paris. It all depends on how bad he wants to win Wimbledon. For me personally, I would love to see him win one more French than another Wimbledon. Of course, the biggest variable here is how well and quick Nadal recovers from his injury.

Yes, I don't think Federer is going to play a lot of clay tournaments. But he could play the Rome Masters or Madrid (where he won a few years ago) or Germany going into the French Open. And if Nadal isn't 100%, Federer's chances to add another FO would be great. There is an extra week before Wimbledon now, so he might just take the risk. I hope he does!

Yes, Federer was a clear #2 in the French from 2006-2011. Now the question is whether that Federer is back. Although I think a Federer who can win grand slams is back after his lean years, this Federer is not the Federer of peak years. I do not think Federer would have made it past some of the clay court specialists last year even if Nadal did not play. Wawrinka was playing well and so was Murray and Thiem. I do not think Federer would have made past any of these on clay. This year Murray is gone and Wawrinka is older. I do not think he can get past Thiem though on current form on slower courts. For the sake of the game, I hope Novak comes back strong and Cilic improves his clay court skills.

Note that Federer has won on the faster surfaces such as Wimbledon and Australian. But has skipped the French and did not do that well at the USO where the courts are slightly slower than the Aussie. Del Potro took care of him. I think the same would have happened in the French.

Now, given the man, I would not put it beyond him to return to his 2006-2011 form on clay but at least until now, I have not seen any serious evidence that he has or can shortly. Let's see what happens. Much more likely is his winning the USO.

It is less about Federer being #2 on clay or not and more about not losing to Nadal repeatedly. He believes that led to defeats on other surfaces as well.

I don't think he would have won Wimby and AO if he played the clay season last year. It was smart of him to skip FO. He's 36+ and I don't think his body can't sustain that level if he doesn't optimize his schedule.

Nice article on Duckhee Lee - Lee — overcoming all odds. Didn't know that he has hearing impairedness.

When you consider that so much of tennis is based on sound, that's pretty amazing. At pro level I guess it is slightly more manageable but I wonder how he coped at junior and future level where players have to make their own calls? I know Agassi is very big on hearing the sound of the racket to be able to react that split second quicker so to make it to pro level is an incredible achievement.

Wawrinka's comeback received another setback, when he lost to the wildcard Griekspoor in R1 at Rotterdam. He was to have played Federer in the QF. If Federer makes the SF in Rotterdam he becomes world #1 again at 36+.
