Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Is it because of lack of funds? Or was it injuries? Sorry, at this old age, I remember nothing.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
I had a chat with Sumit yesterday. He said he's extending his off-season to around March, which is when he would start playing tournaments this year. The reason for this is he's prepping his body to be ready for the physicality of the Challenger Tour.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Not sure if I get that. I never understood his strategy of trying to qualify in tough european challengers exclusively either.
At his age, he needs to play a lot more competitive tennis, and also play enough in Asia to scoop up ranking points which will open up a lot more opportunities for him.
Last 2 years have been train, train, train, play q in Europe, repeat.

He's thinking long-term. He's never been one of those ultra-talented kids who would make it big on the ATP Tour right away, to be honest!

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
The only explanation is that he thinks these long training stints help him improve his game. Who knows!

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Last year too Sumit played very little till end April. Presumably , he took longish training break that time and came back playing at a much higher level challenging top 200 players on European clay.
So, it will be great if he can do the same this year.
One good thing is tournaments in first 2 months of the year are much lower and Sumit does not have too many points to defend too.
So, this would be the best time to take a break if he has to.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
These are our top 5 doubles rankings this week -
28 Rohan Bopanna
55 Divij Sharan
61 Purav Raja
64 Leander Paes
86 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan
Leander Peas is now 4th in the doubles rankings and should no longer be the first choice for our davis cup team. The earlier the AITA realises this better.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
I think AITA has already realized this. That is why they have Leander for this game and Mahesh as the non-playing captain after this match.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Just be open in saying that Paes is getting this chance for creating his DC record, and for the next tie selection will be based on the form and rankings of the players at that time. Why on earth would that be tough for the selection committee?"Considering the current scenario, it is going to be tough for the selection committee to pick him for the next tie. It wouldn't be fair on the other players who are ranked higher than him," he added.
Chatterjee said: "I spoke to Paes informally on retirement. He is fully aware of the situation. But we will give him an opportunity to take a call."

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Yes, that was clear from the decision to bring back Mahesh from the next match. They should have just said it, had a grand retirement party for LP, and be done with it. Who knows why they did not do the obvious? Maybe LP does not want to go away? So, what? Just tell him they will move on.
