These are our top 10 WTA ranking as of today -

195 Ankita Raina
200 Karman Thandi (CH)
388 Rutuja Bhosale (CH)
419 Pranjala Yadlapalli
576 Zeel Desai (CH)
663 Mahak Jain (CH)
683 Kanika Vaidya
704 Riya Bhatia
799 Snehadevi Reddy
828 Dhruti Venugopal

For the first time since 2008 ( when Sania and Sunitha were in top 200) , we have 2 players in top 200. Also 20 year old Karman, 22 year old Rutuja, 19 year old Zeel and 17 year old Mahak are all their career high ranking with 19 year old Pranjala only slightly below her career high. If these 5 players continue to progress over next couple of years, we can have 5-6 players in top 250 or 300 by then.

AITA should have picked either Zeel or Mahak for the Asian Games in place of Riya Bhatia who hasn't had much success this year, plus you should always want to support a talented junior player (Mahak) on cases like these.

It is worth taking a look at our top 5 ranked players this week in both men and women-

Men

107 Bhambri, Yuki
124 Ramkumar Ramanathan
146 Gunneswaran, Prajnesh
312 Sumit Nagal
316 Saketh Myneni

Women

195 Ankita Raina
215 Karman Thandi
280 Pranjala Yadlapalli (CH)
368 Rutuja Bhosale (CH)
562 Zeel Desai (CH)

It is the best phase in terns of rankings for quite a while.

In men, we have 3 players ranked in top 150 since more than 30 years I think and in women, we have 3 players in top 300 for the first time since 2007 when Sania,Sunitha and Shikha were all there. The first time both of these things have happened together.

Can we take the next step and get 3 in mens top 100 and 3 in womens top 150 in next couple of years ? I am getting greedy now. :D

It’s not greedy, actually in women’s we have quite a bit of younger presence that will take us through the next 4-5 years (top-250 level tennis) but it’s disappointing to note that none of the promising young men players have shown improvement - Sumit, Sasi and Arjun all seems to have hit an early wall in showing consistency. Other than Prajnesh (throughout the year) and RamK’s Newport success, men’s single has been a lackluster year for us.

These are our top 10 doubles rankings as of today -

38 Divij Sharan
39 Rohan Bopanna
60 Leander Paes
72 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (CH)
89 Purav Raja
106 N. Sriram Balaji
115 Vishnu Vardhan
186 Arjun Kadhe
230 Saketh Myneni
262 N. Vijay Sunder Prashanth

So, Divij becomes India #1 for the first time in his career this week. However, difference between him and Rohan is only 45 points. So, if Rohan wins a round at Paris masters this week, he will again become India #1. Divij has 100 points to defend from Bangalore challenger title still. Lets us see if he is coming back to defend that and try to keep that India #1 at the end of the year.

Anyway, it looks like a race in mens doubles for India #1 between Rohan and Divij , in womens singles between Ankita and Karman and probably in mens singles too between Yuki,RamK and Prajnesh.

As mentioned elsewhere, Rohan overtakes Divij to again become India #1 at rank 37 while Divij remains at 38.

In the meantime, in WTA rankings we again have our top 2 in top 200.

These are our top 10-

192 Ankita Raina
198 Karman Thandi
287 Pranjala Yadlapalli (CH)
366 Rutuja Bhosale (CH)
577 Zeel Desai
623 Mahak Jain (CH)
624 Riya Bhatia
785 Snehadevi Reddy
854 Sai Chamrthi
879 Sowjanya Bavisetti

3 of the the top 6 are at their career highs and other 3 too are quite close to it. Looking for all the top 6-7 to make an upward move in next few months. The Indian ITF series coming with 5 25k tournaments will be a great opportunity.

Right now, in the live rankings, Yuki is 126, Prajnesh is 128 and RamK is 130. Perhaps the first time ever that we have had 3 Indians between 125 and 130?

Updating our year end doubles rankings ( as none of our top 10 doubles players have futures points- will update singles later as Prajnesh's futures points fall off in couple of weeks)-

2017 year end rankings in bracket-

37 Rohan Bopanna (18)
39 Divij Sharan (47)
64 Leander Paes (63)
75 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (102)
91 Purav Raja (60)
111 N. Sriram Balaji (133)
126 Vishnu Vardhan (116)
169 Arjun Kadhe (603)
202 Saketh Myneni (477)
215 N. Vijay Sunder Prashanth (231)

The ones who have made real progress are Divij,Jeevan and Arjun.

2018 year end ATP singles rankings - mens singles - (with last year's ranking in brackets)

107 Gunneswaran, Prajnesh (243)
133 Ramkumar Ramanathan (148)
137 Bhambri, Yuki (116)
263 Saketh Myneni (620)
339 Sasi Kumar Mukund (426)
387 Arjun Kadhe (608)
480 Sumit Nagal (223)
522 Manish Sureshkumar (1028)
646 Niki Kalouanda Poonacha (1292)
694 Siddharth Rawat (542)

The real progress is made by Prajnesh at the top. Hope he makes it to top 100 and better next year. RamK and Yuki can also get there if RamK improves his game a bit on hard courts and Yuki keeps fit.

Mukund, Arjun and Manish/Niki down the table have also made good progress. I am hopeful that Mukund will make it to top 250 or better next year. He and Sumit ( who had a disappointing year) are our best bets for next top 200 player.

This is based on old rankings formula. There will be some significiant changes once new rankings formula comes into play and first rankings with new formula will be as on 31st December, 2018.

2018 year end WTA rankings ( last year's rankings in brackets)

205 Ankita Raina (276)
207 Karman Thandi (288)
288 Pranjala Yadlapalli (482)
344 Rutuja Bhosale (558)
521 Mahak Jain (750)
555 Riya Bhatia (577)
746 Sowjanya Bavisetti (1099)
769 Zeel Desai (632)
794 Sai Chamarthi (865)
809 Jennifer Luikham (1099)

This has been one of our best year on womens tour. Top 5 have all moved ahead significially this year. Hope to see both Ankita and Karman well inside top 200 soon and also Pranjala join them this year. Lets see if Rutuja has it in her to rise to that level. Mahak should surely go there eventually but this year she may aim more at around top 300-350.

Rankings with the new formula on 31st Dec 2018 (Old formula ranking in the bracket)

110 Gunneswaran, Prajnesh (107)
133 Ramkumar Ramanathan (132)
137 Bhambri, Yuki (137)
259 Saketh Myneni (259)
295 Sasi Kumar Mukund (338)
340 Sumit Nagal (477)
392 Arjun Kadhe (389)
401 N.Sriram Balaji (726)
432 Siddharth Rawat (693)
511T Abhinav Sanjeev Shanmugam (847)
574T Vishnu Vardhan (1205T)
581T Manish Sureshkumar (523)
608T Niki Kalouanda Poonacha (645)
650T Suraj R Prabodh (876)

So few surprising entries into the new top-650 ATP rankings ... Bala, Vishnu, Niki, Suraj, and Abhinav sneaked in with their challenger level points ... Sumit has jumped to the top-350 but he will slide down outside top-350 as next week his last year's Tata Open qualifying points will be removed ... Yuki will also fall outside the top-150 as he is also going to lose 20 ranking points next week.

This is a great chance for Bala to improve his singles ranking and make it match his doubles ranking.

Looks like the new formula has mostly favored our players. They must all be happy with that!
