It is great that this link has been started trying to trace out the history of Indian golf. While the link posted, of indiangolftour.com, is not operational anymore, I believe most of the piece has been shifted to the PGTI site. If I am not wrong, it has been written by Swamy.

There are a lot of wonderful stories from the past which might be lost if not stored safely. While the game might have been a rich man's pastime for a long time, the efforts taken during the 60s and 70s has helped the sport head in the upward direction. Manjit Singh was one of those who thought of starting the PGAI way back in 1978 but unfortunately, a lot of discussions which lasted for many years delayed the formation of the association and that might have been a bit of a blow.

Let's hope we can all contribute and dig out interesting stories from the past that depict the growth of golf in India.

The first golf course outside of Britain is opened in Bangalore, India."

source
http://www.golf.about.com/cs/historyofg ... 180050.htm

This precedes Royal Calcutta Golf Course established in 1829
I asked Brent who writes for about.com about the above reference because the oldest golf course in Bangalore is the Bangalore Golf Club which was established in 1876. According to him, the 1820 reference to Bangalore was about a club that no longer exists but he does not seem to have the source material right now. The site has removed the Bangalore reference for now and refers to the RCGC in its timeline as the oldest existing golf club outside the British Isles.

Even if there was a course set up in Bangalore in 1820, it definitely does not exist anymore.

digitals2_t2,

You posted on 6 threads on six different sports hese messages saying "thanks for info" etc, and included a commercial website URL in your posts. Obviously you are pushing a website. I edited out the URLs from the posts, as this is not a practice allowed here. I have not banned you, but one more such post and you will be banned.

At a minimum, it is clear that Jeev Milkha Singh is the pioneer among Indian golfing pros. He was the first Indian citizen to get a card on the EPGA tour, the first to win tournaments on that tour (he has a total of 3, including the year-ending Volvo Open at Valderama in 2009), the first to be ranked in the top-50 in the world, and the first to finish in the top-10 of a major (he was also perhaps the first to have played all four majors; he has played to the finish in 3 of the majors, only failing to ever make the cut at The Open). He has played three years on the PGA tour, although the first Indian citizen to get a full PGA tour card was Arjun Atwal. Apart from the three EPGA titles, he has 6 titles on the full APGA tour, and four on the Japan Tour.
