World Rankings of "Indian" Golfers - Feb. 6, 2006

Post by Dhruv »

Wow, that is indeed a compehensive list. Hopefully you could copy and paste most of that and did not have to type it all out :).

I don't much care for the World rankings as the USPGA tour is given much more weight than the European tour, though that may not neccesarily be the case skills wise now as it was say 20 years ago. I say this because I have read that the US almost always won the Ryder Cup, but recently the matches have been much closer and most of Europes team is drawn from the European PGA rather than USPGA. Also as the style of golf courses is different in both places, the Europeans have traditionally not done as well in US majors and the same goes for Americans in the British Open. Just my two cents.

Dhruv,

I type too slow and I used the copy and paste method to compile the list. I did manually delete the various points system written next to the names, which I thought would be of little use to most fans. I got this information from the Asian PGA golf site and I will try to update this information if it lessens your work.

I agree with you that the US PGA runs the show because this is where the money is. I don't play golf (an unusual quality for a physician) but the golf courses in USA and Europe certainly look different. The greens, bunkers, height of the grass in the rough, etc are very different in the two continents and US players have a tougher time when the Ryder Cup is played in Europe.

Me neither, never played golf in my life and am not a big fan either but there were requests for such a forum, and golf info is reasonably easy to access on the web so I thought why not :).

So a golf forum, with posts by two people who play no golf :D

I am not a big fan of golf either but became interested when Tulsa hosted the PGA Tour Championship twice, the PGA Championship, and the US Championship all in the past ten years. The hospital where I work is the medical facility for the PGA golfers and physicians can choose to provide free medical care at the golf course and in return get to see the tournament for free and meet with the players. I have not availed of this opportunity but Tiger Woods did come to the hospital when his father was admitted during the tournament with a heart problem. Tiger Woods was very nice and on his own went to the children's wards to meet with the patients. In fact he just called up the ward clerk on the children's ward and asked her if he could come to meet the children but did not want any one to tell the press. And then he actually showed up a few minutes later!

World Rankings of "Indian" Golfers - Feb. 6, 2006

Post by BSharma »

Good to see somebody else in the golf forum!

I believe Dhruv was making a point about the improvement of the European players over the years and that they are now able to win the Ryder Cup against the Americans sometimes. The top golf players from around the world want to play in the PGA (USA) because of the money and the prestige. The money at some of the European PGA tournaments have increased substantially and now some of the US players are going to Europe more often to play a few tournaments. I believe they are also getting "appearance money" in Europe at these tournaments.

I feel that there is not as much depth in the European PGA as there is in US PGA.

Post by PKBasu »

Sad to see the steady decline of Jeev Milkha Singh -- possibly injury-related. He was the first Indian to qualify for the European PGA and, if I remember right, was runner-up in an EPGA event in South Africa.

But it was Arjun Atwal who managed to win two events on the European PGA tour -- the Singapore Open two years ago, and the Malaysia Open less than a year ago (both are events co-recognised by the European and Asian tours). It was nice to see him beat Nick Faldo, etc. near here. But he hasn't reproduced that magic more often.
Jyoti Randhawa, though, appears to have been the most consistent -- making steady progress up the ranks. Last year, he was #1 on the Asian tour even without winning a single tournament. Just consistency took him to the top, and the same seems to be working for him even now.
(I am only an incidental golf fan too, so apologies if some of the above reads like utter tripe to an expert).

I can only speak for myself but I am not an expert on golf. For some time Dhruv and I wrote about the Indian golf players in this forum but neither of us play golf, and simply recorded the performances of the players. Then along came Ajay who revved up the forum with his insightful comments and a few more people started writing regularly. Our goal is to bring to the attention of the public the achievements of the Indian golfers since very few Indian newspaper write about them. I believe that Indians can become world class golfers and that some day we will have a few Indians playing regularly in the PGA. I am eagerly waiting to see if an Indian golfer makes it into the PGA first or an Indian tennis player into the ATP events regularly. Smriti Mehra beat all the Indian male golfers by playing in the highest league (LPGA).

PKB, welcome to the golf forum.

I must say I know even less about women's golf in India, but am thorougly impressed by Smriti Mehra. After what Se Ri Pak has achieved (recently finishing 10th in a men's event in Korea, and looking increasingly like the Tiger Woods of women's golf) Asian women can aspire to the very top...

by the way, Bhushan, why do you have Fiji listed in the Asian rankings (which would make it necessary to include Asutralia and New Zealand and make it an asia/oceania ranking) and why are the Japanese not listed?

Jay, the source of the ranking is the Asian PGA and this is how it ranks the golfers.

Just like you people, I'm also not expert in golf and I've never played this game. But I also got interested when some of the current golfers started showing promises. Like most of the Indians, I was big fan of Cricket. But then I joined Jay and others and followed the rise of Indian Express Paes and Bhupathi. I used to occasionaly contribute on Jay' tennis site. Around same time I developed interest in Golf.

It was silly of me that I didn't realize that we have Golf forum too in this site earlier. I had a link that use to directly take me to the tennis forum and I will just follow tennis postings. All the time I was also feeling that most of the Indians are just unaware of Indian golf, although they will very well know about Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Els etc. I also have faith that sooner or later Indians will break into US PGA tour.
