That's good newes david. I didn't think he was close to starting actual practices - I thad thought that he was in even worse shape than that. This is great news. Let us see if he can come to shape in 3 months. A Jugraj at even 80% would be a big boost for our team.
In fact, I think even Jugraj's presence helps our team a lot mentally - in that for a change after ages, they can play without the thoughts of their well-known PC deficiencies constantly being in their minds. Just knowing that we too have a guy who is not chickenfeed in PCs probably would give them confidence. Thast is if he is even half-way decent healthy.
Get back fast, Jugraj!

It is good to see Jugraj on the field holding a hockey stick. His arms look ok and does not show gross abnormality in the photograph. He appears to have put on some weight, which is not unexpected. I hope he is able to move his elbow, wrist and shoulder joints well.
Jugraj's presence on the field should give a big morale boost to the Indian team but India should still be looking for other penalty corner specialists. Time will tell if Jugraj will regain his previous skills, and we should not be complacent in the meantime.

Terrific to see Jugraj back on the field. But it will be a long time before he is match-fit -- as suggested in that photograph. Let's pray he is ready within the next 3 months.

Here is the latest. He says he may join the team. He still has some ways to go I think. But good news.

I hope Jugraj makes it back soon. Unfortunately, this is not the only factor we have to worry about at present. I read in the Indian newspapers about a team for a conditioning camp that has been called prior to a pre-Olympic tour -- and Dhanraj, Baljit Dhillon and one other senior player (possibly even Sandeep Michael) are excluded. If these shenanigans can happen barely 4 months before the Olympics, god help Indian hockey!

I keep reading mixed messages about Jugraj's recovery. Some articles claim that he has recovered and will be ready to play in the Olympics. Others give a more pessimistic view. Here is an article written by Sukhwant Basra that details Jugraj's status and some comments by the great drag flicker.
I wish that more Indian sports writers can publish articles with their names.
Several hurdles in Jugraj's way

Sadly, it seems unlikely that Jugraj can fully regain fitness (and ability) in time for Athens. It's much better for him to gradually achieve full fitness and mobility in his repaired joints rather than try to rush things -- and make things worse in the long run. Playing around too much with the human body (especially when it's injured) is folly, as Bhushan, Neil and other doctors in the forum will agree...

It has been some two years since the car accident (has it been that long?) that completely deflated our team's can-do spirit and halted a temporary upsurge in Indian hockey, Jugraj is now fine ...
Jugraj's team will be in the PHL first division and he has been playing fine ... Here is something from dnaindia.com by Siddharth Monga --

It is heartening to note that Jugraj is making progress both physically and mentally. Getting back on the team and playing the sport that he loves dearly is a sure way of keeping doubts and depresion at bay. Time will tell if he will ever become the player that he used to be before the accident, but his hard work on and off the field since the accident should motivate the Indian hockey players to achieve success at a higher level.
Can mugu or other forum members who have seen him play hockey recently tell us more about his movement on the field, aggressiveness in tackling the forwards of the opposing team, and his ability to keep up with international level players?
I wish Jugraj the best in 2006 and beyond.

Saw him in Shastri tournament. He has put on weight, but has done exceedingly well to come back and play at this level.BSharma wrote:Can mugu or other forum members who have seen him play hockey recently tell us more about his movement on the field, aggressiveness in tackling the forwards of the opposing team, and his ability to keep up with international level players?

Can he come back into the Indian team?
Big question. His present condition doesn't suggest it, though the fact that he has come this far from an impossible-looking position could mean the man has tons and tons of determination. He has said that he knows what more is needed of him for him to come back.
We will have to leave it at that.

By the way, I could not believe that he is still oly 21! .. that is what the article said. If so, he could certainly lose weight (expected weight gain after such surgery and all) and might even come back to the Indian team! .. wow, wouldn't that be something?
