The official draw for the forthcoming FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 were held in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha earlier today. The Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 will be played from January 13 to January 29, next year at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the new Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela in the state of Odisha. Meanwhile, India have been drawn in the Pool D of the tournament, alongside heavyweights like Spain, England, and Wales.

Hosts India are the highest-ranked team at World No. 5 in the Pool D. They will face the World No. 6 ranked England in the group stage, having last played them during a thrilling 4-4 match at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Meanwhile, two-time silver medallists Spain are current ranked 8th, while World No. 16 Wales will make their maiden World Cup appearance.

Looks like a pretty good pool for us, especially in home conditions. England has troubled us, but we generally have their measure. Spain is not as good as they were a decade and two decades ago. Wales are a weak side.

Given that we are number 5 in the world, we are pretty lucky not to have any of the top-4 teams in our pool. Perhaps the pools are based on a month or 2 old ranking, when India was ranked 4th??

I would say the group is tricky..... England will come full prepared against us.....They manage to an almost lost game which will give them huge confidence.....Teams like Spain is more like Japan, which is very unpredictable.......so India team need to play best of themselves to ensure direct quarter finals qualification......

The Indian men’s hockey team have drawn England, Wales and Spain as their opponents in Group D of the upcoming FIH hockey men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela. The tournament will be played from 13 to 29 January, 2023.

Speaking after the draw, chief coach Graham Reid said, “The pools in the FIH Hockey World Cup and the Olympics are always difficult. Every team is there to win. We just played England and Wales in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and the games were of the highest quality. To top that off with Spain who have been improving in the last 12 months will make the first-round games very difficult. As is the case with the finals qualification system now in place you also have to keep one eye on the cross-over pool and it certainly doesn’t get any easier there.”

Indian hockey teams lambast former coach Marijne for making accusations against players in his book

"We have seen in the press today some disturbing allegations being made by the erstwhile Chief Coach of our teams, Sjoerd Marijne. We have come together to state our deep disappointment in his exploitation of our personal information and false accusations. He has used his time of coaching us for commercial gain to sell his book at the cost of our reputations. This is a complete breach of trust and his duty of care as a coach. It also leads to all Indian athletes like us to feel vulnerable in such situations," said the joint written statement of both men's and women's hockey teams.

What do you think guys...???Is it a cheap trick to sell the book or there is some reality????

Difficult to say, with all the politics that players are also capable of playing, no? But I would give the players the benefit of doubt first, and assume that it was a book stunt. But they all seemed to like Maijne earlier, so something is not fitting together well. Anyway, I have not followed the story to say more.

Hockey World Cup 2023: MIND BOGGLING spending of 1,100 Crore by Odisha to conduct FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup: Check DETAILS

Where the money is being spent? The highest amount of Rs 875.78 crore is being invested in the building of the new stadium at Rourkela. The stadium is at the final stage of construction.

Rs 84 crore is being spent on the construction of accommodation buildings.
Rs 10.50 crore is earmarked for peripheral development work in Rourkela
Rs 13 crore for electrical works in Birsa Munda Hockey stadium.
Similarly, the government has provided Rs 17.50 crore to Hockey India for putting synthetic turfs. The turfs are being put up in both Rourkela and Bhubaneswar stadiums.
The government will also spend Rs 75 crore on venue management, accommodation, transportation and media publicity.

The state government had invested only Rs 66.98 crore in hosting the last Hockey World Cup in 2018. However, this time, the outlay has been enhanced by 16 times to Rs 1,098.40 crore.

Yeah, India has money. Rather than waste it on a lot of other BS that the Govt does, let them waste it on sports. Sports may be BS, but it is at least enjoyable BS

As long as the amount of corruption is less than 50%, having those facilities will only benefit Indian hockey. I draw a line at >50% corruption
