Can someone please update as to what's going on? No updates on the couple of sites I have been following. It's frustrating and nervous as hell.

Sreejesh saves one to give India a lifeline. Harmanpreet scores. Australia 2-1 India.
Australia scores one more to make it 3-1. Surinder misses one. Australia beat India
Can someone shed light what happened with the 2nd shot that Australia took?

Re: Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
It was an unintentional obstruction by Sreejeesh with ball getting stuck under his pads........

Heart breaking loss in tie-breaker! However, super excited by the fact that we seemed to have dominated the match against Australia and won a silver medal. If we play at this level and with some reinforcements (Sardara, Rupinder Pal Singh), it looks like we should be in medal contention at Rio...

Re: Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
Why India were backpassing when Australia were down to nine? India lost the plot there. India cant win in Penalty strokes. Australia is far superior in this department. India scored only 1 goal and that too by luck. No authority in stroke taking. We didn't even come close to scoring goals in shoot out. It didnt look like we would score. Sreejeesh is my man of the match. He saved 2 out of 4. What more he could do !

Totally agree with you, Arjun. It was tantalizingly close! Looks like we need just a little nudge to create more chances with that ball possession. Still can't believe we played such an attacking game holding the ball close to 80% of the match against none other than the mighty Aussies! Very heart warming performance, indeed!

India has raised official complaint/ protest that obstruction in second stroke came after time 8 seconds elapse (hooter) ... So technical committee is checking that and result is still on hold.

It was thoroughly a delight watching our guys play against the mighty Aussies shoulder to shoulder ..........they can take a whole lot of confidence from this match and even the kangaroos admitted dat the Indians where playing some top notch hockey ......
It was worth staying up late at night here in India
Hoping a podium finish at Rio ( or atleast a top 5) seeing are guys gearing up for it

Re: Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
We have appealed against the Beale shoot out. Not sure if this is good for the game...no way will the decision be overturned.
What a pleasant surprise to give the Aussies such a hard time. We rode our luck a bit, but what a great week for us.
I'm not happy about the appeal. It just leaves a bad taste. Maybe the appeal will have a long term effect in that bad decisions against us will be reduced!!

Re: Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
When it comes to stick skills we are 2nd to none. We needed to finish it in regulation time. When your hockey skill is better than your opponent then why would you want to win it by shoot out? Winning or losing by penalty strokes doesn't make much difference. It's all the same. Winning in shoot out doesn't excite me. Instead of going for more circle penetration we did plenty of back passing in the last quarter. We need to go for more aerial shots. It was quite effective today. Also we should release the ball quickly, unnecessary holding on to the ball for a longer period often invites trouble. We need to avoid this things in future. But this tournament has proved one thing we are now among the best if not the best.

Re: Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
Singapore TV didn't show the match live as it started at 3:15am. But from the live stream commentary and Viren Rasquinhas's tweets, it is clear that India played superlative Hockey in the final, dominating possession. We have never been good at penalty shoot outs (1973 World Cup final, for instance and 1976 shoot out against Aus in the pool playoff match), so I'm not surprised we couldn't win that.
But Indian Hockey is back!!!!! With Sardara, Rupinderpal and possibly Gurbaaj in the side, we can legitimately aim for gold at Rio!

Re: Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
Penalty shoot outs in those days were consisting of penalty strokes. Now, it has changed and it is one on one by an attacker against a defender.
I think we are actually pretty good at this variant as it was started in Hockey India league first. We won the Asiad gold with this. Yesterday, was more a aberration and anything could have happened on another day.
Keeping penalty shoot out aside, I am more encouraged by our level of play in regular play. We matchedand sometimes were better than Australia in most of the play ( except conceding penalty corners). If I remember correctly, this is the first time in many years that we have run Australia so close in a major competition. Otherwise, we have sometimes done well against them in bilateral series but in big competitions they used to thrash us (CWG, world league, Azlan Shah).
Hope this gives us confidence going in at Rio.

Re:Champions trophy Hockey 2016, London
As expected, our appeal was thrown out (because of a different offence by Sreejesh). The video umpire made a poor decision and, hopefully this will not happen again. In a way, it is good we appealed, even if it was just to show that we will not simply accept the crap umpiring decisions in future. I think the umpiring bias that we have suffered for decades is one of our main obstacles hampering us in key matches.
Our performance in the final was excellent. We were genuinely competitive and the Aussie press was by passed with clever passing and accurate aerials. The Aussies created chances as they always do, but far fewer than usual and we actually dominated the stats (possession, circle entries and shots) apart from the PC count. How many times have we seen this in the last 40 years? Conceding so many PCs was the only blight...but we defended them really well.
I felt we played pretty well against Belgium too, although the result didn't go our way. I have no problem losing matches, so long as we play like this. As most of us have been saying, we just don't want to see dumb hockey.
So what were the positives?
1.We kept possession way better in all the matches, cut down on silly errors and passed at greater speed.
2. We defended really well, by falling back in numbers and tackled so much better than usual. We actually had a decent press created by our forwards.
3. Far fewer cards.
4. Harmanpreet and Surender added that extra bit of quality, although almost everyone stepped up their performances (more of this below)-none more so than Raghunath and Chinglensana.
5. Our attacks looked incisive and we got shots at goal or PCs from most of our circle penetrations.
Negatives:
1. Umpiring decisions usually hurt us (fouls or cards not given to the opposition).
2. Apart from Sunil, our forwards were generally poor. We need to unearth more quality (or give others as long a run as Akashdeep, Manddeep and Talwinder have had).
3. Harjeet didn't do too well and Oltmans didn't use him much after that hack that gifted Germany a PC and a chance to equalize.
4. We still have phases where we go crazy and get cards or play really poorly.
