Interesting to see Indian team for this tournament as tournament has very lower rank teams. China and Ireland are the only teams which can offer resistance.

But it is important tournament as it helps to qualify for World Cup.

Nice to see youngster got recognition for their good work in HIL and get chance to represent India at national level. HWL-2 is a good platform to show their talent as most team are very low ranked.

Indian hockey squad for World League round 2
Player-of-the-tournament in last year's Hockey India National Championship in Bangalore, Gurjinder Singh, Malak Singh, Mandeep Singh and Chinglensana Singh Kangujam have been drafted into the squad for the Hockey World League Round 2

Interesting to note that Gurjinder Singh has been selected. I am assuming he is the chap who played for Punjab in last October's nationals. He played in the WSH and that means the selectors have taken their blinkers off and are looking outside the HI nominated group of players. Can someone (Ankit or Jaydeep?) confirm this?

If the selectors are going to be sensible and actually pick our best players, then we have some reason to be optimistic. From the WSH, I would certainly draft in: Lalit Upadhyay, Vikas Pillay, Bharat Chikara, Roshan Minz and Ajmer Singh.

Having watched the HIL, I'm glad Sandeep is not in the team. He may score off PCs against weaker goalkeepers, but has been poor against the top keepers when it matters and he is always liable to cost 1-2 goals per game because of his woeful defending. Look at the difference Rupinder made to our defence after the Olympics. Good to see Kothajit back and Yuvraj out. The latter is too weak on the ball and lacks pace. Now we need to off load Dharamvir and Danish. These 2 lose the ball too easily and Dharamvir has trouble trapping passes on the strong (forehand) side. On his reverse side, he is appalling. Danish is too weak when in possession and is repeatedly pulled up for stick blocking'. We have better replacements (see WSH list above).

Gurjinder's defending is in the Sandeep mold- so not too keen on him yet, but perhaps he can improve (like Ragunath has). Mandeep has looked good in the HIL. Malak has been impressive too, although less consistent than Mandeep. Harbir has looked OK sometimes and then pretty ordinary in the very next match. The other player who has looked good is Amit Rohidas. He can play in defence or midfield.

We have some useful midfielders/ defensive players: Sardar, Kothajit, Birendra, Manpreet, Rupinder & to a lesser extent, Ragunath. Maybe in the near future we will have a squad that is strong in all positions. Let's hope Nobbs can raise the performance bar in the next 2 tournaments (World Hockey League and Sultan Azlan Shah Cup).

SSP, u r right ... He played for Chandigarh Comets as the defender in the WSH.

It would be good if the selectors are going to consider outside HI nominated players for best available players ... Yes, something to be optimistic.

Looks like Gurjinder had the same doubts as me!! I thought there maybe another chap (with the same name) as well ;)

Ireland could give us some trouble in this World League.

There is no love rush for WSH. When HIL idea came up around Champions Trophy at Kangaroo land. There were few players separated them selves from WSH and intent to be part of HIL. Gurjinder was one of them. I read some where that Gurjinder and like were not part of HIL auction and CT squad because IIRC Batra said they are in " rehabilitation " phase :-~ when Batra were asked perticular about bright prospect like Gurjinder. Yes that was THE word I read. And they were/are in the phase because they distance them selves from WSH to eligible for HIL and future international fixtures, they have to go through rehabilitation.

So I think Gurjinder is included in national squad that because he may completed that phase ;) .

I thought it wouldn't be straight forward to include the WSH players.

Rehabilitation??? This Batra guy annoys me every time he opens his mouth.

Any news about what's happening with WSH 2013? Is it going to die like the PHL did a few years ago? At this rate, how long will the HIL last? Given our history, we can't expect anything to endure and any progress has to destroyed and things MUST regress a few steps every year
