Germany's 12th man. Big Data We have tons of experts of Indian origin who work on/with big data. Such an exercise can be done for any team sports. At the end of the day, it depends upon execution in the field and no amount of big data analysis will help the Indian football team become even Asian champions, but, we can get some improvement in sports such as hockey or cricket or even boxing/wrestling, etc. if only we were seriously systematic and planned way in advance ...

Germany missed out on so many chances since the late 90s. They kept reaching the SFs and Finals of the Euros and the WCs. In fact, they have reached the semi-finals on 13 occasions (lucky this time?) That is a record. They have been reaching the later stages of major tournaments (even their clubs, see Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund) This is because they have a very good scouting network, a strong domestic league which unearths a lot of talent, gives them a chance on the European stage and they make good use of technology. No wonder they're referred to as machines. A fantastic victory for Die Mannschaft..

Germany are truly efficient -- in everything, not just football. (Don't we know it from hockey?!). As a teenager, I became much more of a fan of the Bundesliga than the English leagues, partly because the English weren't even capable of qualifying for the World Cup in those days. The contrast with Germany's consistency is stark. Brazil are the supreme artists of football, Germany the scientists. (The English are the inventors whose systems haven't kept pace, so they are still trying to live off the laurel of being the inventor..).

Sadly, my team from the teenage years -- Borussia Monchengladbach -- are no longer serious contenders, so I have had an excuse to be a less than avid fan of club football (anywhere in the world!) in the past 2-3 decades.

While the Mannschaft were getting to the semis regularly, they weren't a team filled with great players until the Schweini, Lahm generation came along in 2006.

Their runs in 2002 for example were more due to their organization and teamwork than actual talent. This generation of course is their greatest generation since the Matthaus, Sammer, Kohler generation.

Not any more. There has been nothing artistic about any Brazilian side in the last 8 years. They play a hard nosed tough tackling style now.
