Indian players abroad

Post by prasen9 »

Sorry if there exists a thread but I could not find it in the first 10 pages of threads under Football. Subrata Paul will play abroad. Here is an article: Paul in Denmark, etc.

I have been trying to get information on this. While the cases of Bhaichung, Sunil Chettri and even the legendary Mohammad Salim (not to be confused with Mohammed Sleem the tennis player), there was a time when some Indians played for clubs in SE Asia as well as Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka. But very little information seems to be available.

That is really excellent news. The Danish league may be far from the top league in Europe, but it will still be far better than playing in India. I hope we have a few more people follow him to either smaller European countries or second division clubs in the top European countries. But perhaps the talent isn't there.

As a devout Tottenham fan for close to a quarter century, I never knew that they offered Goswami a tryout. That is heartbreaking that he never took them up on it.

Chhetri never actually made a team in the MLS by the way. He had a tryout with Sporting Kansas City but I don't believe they actually signed him.

It's going to be a 6-month stint with the Vikings as the team are called. Getting into the Danish Superliga is great for Subrata. Danish Superliga was in the top-15 before of the top European leagues but currently it's ranked 19th as per the UEFA coefficient. This entitles it 1 CL spot and 3 Europa league spots. The Vikings are ranked 8th and the competition is tough to reach even the 4th spot. IIRC, I remember an article where Subrata mentioned that he would like to perform well and impress the scouts and maybe try his luck and get a chance to play for bigger clubs like Red Bull Salzburg. Considering his age and career, that would be really impressive if it happens. There were a couple of more players who had gone to Europe for trials but so far Paul is the only one who has brought back some news.

Yes, second team goalkeepers rarely play. But, they are one injury away from playing. Or one person losing form. Or a red card. Or two yellow cards. Then maybe there are penalty shootouts. Or even a small stint impressing scouts to move up. Something is better than nothing.

At the very least, he will be exposed to modern football and training methods first hand. Maybe he can then come back and coach the juniors or something. Exposure is good.

Gurpreet has the physical attributes of a GK. I hope he makes it big as he also has age on his side..

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the ISL thread but looks like this one qualifies more for the following link.
Romeo Fernandes becomes first Indian to play in Brazil

Romeo got his chance to get his first-team action (albeit as a sub) for a top division Brazilian club (details in link) Like Gurpreet, he has age on his side and he got into the limelight thanks to the ISL (was one of the best Indian players last season) He has that flair and skills to improve. I hope the chips fall in the right places for this lad.

Abneet Bharti to Anderlecht? Abneet is not even 18 yet and is 6 ft + and holds an Indian passport IIRC. He can play as a defensive midfielder and also a defender. He does play for Real Valldolid's youth squad. This is some good news.
I hope more and more Indian footballers try their trade in Europe and South America. There is lot of interest for the sport in regional Indian powerhouses like Goa,Bengal,Kerala and the North-East. That being said, they need more facilities and exposure to improve themselves. The ISL is a good step in this regard.

Indian international goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan has signed by English football club West Ham United's ladies team.
West Ham Ladies are currently in the Football Association's (FA) Women's Premier League Southern Division, a league in the third level in the women's football structure in England.

Need support to Aditi Chauhan, so if possible sign petition to support her.

Support petition of Aditi Chauhan
But despite all her achievements, she is uncertain of how her future would span out. She is not even sure if she will be able to finish her first season at WHLFC as her student visa expires in three months and her expenses are paid for by her parents back in India. WHLFC are unable to grant her a visa nor does the club pay for her contributions because of the FA league policies that prohibit a third tier English women's league clubs from paying their players or sponsoring their visas.

But despite London's increasing rent, a sportsperson's dietary, fitness and travel expenditures, and a future that hinges on several ifs and buts, Chauhan toils hard everyday and gives the game all she's got, for it's the passion for the game that got her thus far, and she is confident that this would take her ahead too.

Let's pledge our support and help Aditi get the support and help that she not only wants, but also deserves. Here's what she needs:
- Help from Indian government for her Work Visa so that she can continue her season at West Ham.
- Financial support for her efforts.
- Wishes from all Indians so that she can continue her journey and explore the path that has never been explored before and motivate thousands of females in India to take up the beautiful game.

16 yrs-old Vardhin Manoj, a U.S. citizen by birth, has been offered a place in Harvard University soccer team and has agreed to join the team as soon as he finishes school.
The 11th grade student of La Costa Canyon High School, California, is the first player from India to be offered a place in the Harvard University soccer team purely on the basis of football talent. As per report Vardhin Manoj impressed all and sundry with his impressive goal scoring skills in U.S. Western Region competition.

Great for the kid! But playing soccer for Harvard is not necessarily a very big deal sports/soccer-wise. The Ivy League is defined as those elite east coast schools who do not offer sports scholarships. So the standard of most sports isn't all that high (although Sen Bill Bradley of Princeton did become a NBA basketballer, and later Senator). Harvard has produced one Major League Soccer player, and one soccer Olympian for the US. If he does well in college football, Vardhin could well be a nice addition to the India national team roster though!

Vikash Dhorasoo was born in Harfleur, France but is actually of Indo-Mauritian origin belonging to the Telugu community. He started his professional career with Le Havre but his best spell was at Lyon where he spent five seasons and won two French league titles with them. Dhorasoo also spent one season at Italian giants AC Milan, with whom he won a Champions league runners-up medal in 2005. He won 18 caps for France at international level, including two substitute appearances in the 2006 World Cup."

There is also Harpal Singh and ofcourse Mohammed Salim who though was an outright Indian, was the first to ply his trade in Europe.
