Our u-16 side played 1-1 draw against the host u-16 Uzbekistan side in their final group match to finish on top of Group B and qualify for the AFC U-16 Championship Bahrain 2020 to be held next year.

As can be seen above, we have been playing pretty well for the last few years, qualifying into the Asian u16 finals in 2015, and 2017. We may be playing even better lately though. We were also one win away last year from making the SF of the Asian finals and qualifying for the 2019 world u-17... but we had to beat top seeds Korea in the QF (see above) and went down in a 0-1 loss, which itself was better than expected.

This time, hopefully we won't end up with the best in Asia in the final-8. But we have been playing at a pretty high level, considering the 5-0, 5-0 scores against Bahrain and Turkmenistan, and even the draw today against the hosts Uzbeks is notable. Actually, I believe we are on a 14 match unbeaten streak right now in u16. Football has come back from dead in the last few years in India...

It happened despite the paucity of fields and cricket continues to coexist in a healthy way. :p

Haha :) ... But seriously, if not for the paucity of fields, we would be (should be) in the world top-50 in football and perennially in the Asian top-4. But we may get there, as cricket is slowly becoming less popular among young kids.... Just my impression. Other sports are also getting some attention in the past dozen or so years, unlike in the quarter century since 1983. Sometime ago Sameer had talked about cricket becoming less and less the sport of Mumbai kids, and guessed that attitudes may be changing among kids. I think he may have been right. Watching IPL has made football a sexier sport for many kids.

But the fields issue is probably still there. Despite a 1.3 billion population, the number of kids under 12 who find fields and back alleys to play football like crazy, is probably not more than the number in many poorer countries with less than 50 million population. No, cricket and football are not co-existing in a healthy way just yet. Need some 20% of the fields and open spaces where cricket is played to change to football areas. Though it is just a smallish reduction in cricket craze, it would probably mean a 3 or 4 fold increase in the number of football-playing kids. It may not affect our cricket standing either (well, if it does, I don't care anyway). Once we get to such a "healthy coexistence", watch out for India parking itself permananently in the world top-30 or top-50 in football!

Jay, I agree. Of course, you knew someone will remind you of your lamenting, right? I agree that it’s a shame that we are ranked so low in the world’s most popular and probably cheapest sport (no wonder why it’s most popular) although it probably has the highest salaries (again, no wonder).

However, off topic, the loss to Pakistan in volleyball even for the lowly positions boggles my mind. Surely, India’s resources and passion for volleyball cannot be second to Pakistan. How we are not miles ahead let alone lose to them is odd. It’s nothing to do with the bug nation; I’d wonder the same if it were any neighboring country except China, of course.

Neither volleyball nor football are popular sports across the country (football is popular as a couch potato sport but not a participation one).

The states where they were (are?) popular need to do a better job.

We would be punching at our weight in sports if even 20% of our states would perform at the level of Haryana (2% of the population but a third of our medals at major competitions, and a lot of our hockey players as well).

Don't worry too much. That is just a temporary blip, because we hadn't played at this level for 2-3 years and Pakistan got a chance because of our absence. We have been ahead of Pakistan for quite a good while and I don't think they had been ranked ahead of us for a decade or two, before the FIVB ban due to the two warring factions claiming to be our federation. Now that we are back, we will soon be on top of Pakistan. But we have never been "miles ahead" of Pakistan though. We would beat them at least 4 out of 5 times in the past (may be 9 out of 10) though the matches would occasionally go into 5 sets and all that. We will be back there beating them again pretty soon. This tournament was the first in years for our players and some rust was expected. I was actually quite pleased that we quickly got back to the Asian top-8 (where we were always in the 6 thru 8 range). It was important for ranking, seeding, etc from now on.
Yes, :Offtopic:

Back to junior football, here is an article with a clip of the highlights - the two goals today - India hold Uzbekistan to 1-1 draw to qualify for 2020 AFC U16 Championship; Iran, UAE & Qatar among qualified sides,
and a companion article on the qualifiers from other groups - 2020 AFC U16 Championship Qualifiers ASEAN Roundup: Indonesia only side to qualify as Vietnam, Thailand miss out

It turns out that we would have qualified as the last at-large team even with a 1-2 loss today, over Thailand, Vietnam, Iraq and Hong Kong, who also had 2 wins and a loss, on goal difference.

Tajikistan, India, Iran, S.Arabia, Qatar, UAE, China, Australia, N.Korea, Japan, and S.Korea were the winners of groups A thru K respectively. The 4-best 2nd place teams were Yemen, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Oman from Groups E, G, B, and D respectively. They and host Bahrain makes the field of 16.

The final-16 will be in Bahrain, Sep 16 to Oct 3rd, 2020. Need to reach the semifinal there to make FIFA u17 2021.
