Re: 2009 U.S. Open

Fabulous victory by LP-LD. LP is clearly the magician at the net and his serves are also very effective even though his first serves are in the 110-119 range. LD is very solid from the back court but is not very effective at the net. This is LP's 11th mens doubles GS final -- he has 5 titles from hi...

Re: Indian Boxing Thread ...

Let's hope we can keep the olympics momentum going and get at least one medal in the WCs. I think we had 3 in the Olympics QF while we have 2 here but it may be the field here is tougher with more rounds to get through.

Re: Indian Billiards - Pankaj Advani 2009 World Pro Champion

I think it is time to make billiards an olympic sports. They could have singles, doubles, quadruples etc. in long and short format. This would give us a shot at 4-5 medals and is at least as interesting as the absurd number of events in rowing for example. :D

Re: Davis Cup (for India) 2009

I think they have done the correct thing. They should look at both Rohan and Yuki in SA and go with the one who gives us the best chance to win now. Giving Yuki DC experience is important but winning this tie is far more important. This represents a chance to make it into the world group for the fir...

Re: Rohan Bopanna thread...

I agree. This is the time to introduce Yuki to the challenges of Davis Cup play. Even if he loses, he should be reasonably competitive, so it should be a solid learning experience for him. He is probably capable of winning one match as it seems the top South African Kevin Anderson is not playing and...

Re: Misc. news about Indian hockey

I'm OK with these relatively long trips as long as we also take a fairly large number of younger players and expose all of them to playing in India colors. Even if Canada is not the toughest opponents, rubbing shoulders with our top players and coaches should benefit the younger set. Also a little c...

Re: WTA Tour/Non-India Fed Cup

Yes, it would be great if Clijsters could win as she is a class act and has a very watchable game as well. However, Serena looks to be in ominous form and she remains the favorite.

Re: 2009 U.S. Open

I think junior tennis events turn out to be more unpredictable based on ranks than the mens draw because players can improve rapidly over short periods of time and also not everyone plays the same tournaments so that the rankings are not as solid as in the mens. For example, the #2 seed in the mens ...

Re: 2009 U.S. Open

Punarayan, loved your eye witness account. Your observations on the aspects that Somdev has to improve is pretty consistent with what we've heard, that he needs to add a better transition/offensive component to his counter punching abilities. That will not only help him with the top 50 players but e...

Re: $ 10K India F7/ F8 /F9 , New Delhi ( Aug.17,24,31)

Looking at the scorelines, it appears that Jeevan might have been the best Indian player in this event. After Somdev, Yuki, Rohan, and Vishnu (and Prakash if eligible), Jeevan may well be our next best player in competition with Ranjeet. My order for our singles players right now (if I had to choose...

Re: 2009 U.S. Open

Close loss by Somdev as he lost the points battle by 111-116. He converted only 4 of the 20 break points he had. However, this performance does show that he can compete with the better players on the big stage. Now, if only he can more consistently dispose of the lesser players on the smaller stages...

Re: 2009 U.S. Open

Yes, while I agree that Yuki has the potential to be our best player in a while, there is still a lot to be done before he can consistently win against the much stronger mens game. A lot of top juniors who don't have power don't do as well against the top men despite very early success against the j...

Re: 2009 U.S. Open

I have never believed that it is THAT easy to change the basics of a serve. I have also never felt that the serve mechanics itself is what kills Sania. It is the lack of *confidence* in whatever it is she is doing, that is totally killing her now. I think it is about 66.67% mental. I can tell you t...

Re: 2009 U.S. Open

While it is clear that Sania is nowhere near her form of 2 years ago, we should not overreact to this loss. Her results and her ranking place her at a solid top 60 level or so from which she now has to chart her improvement. I think this loss is an aberration which represents a bad day at the office...
