Re: Athletics Thread (General/World)

Seems somewhat speculative. Looks like the prize money is only for gold medalists. Those that are gold medal contenders are likely already somewhat well funded and tested, so it seems unlikely that this would be a bigger incentive to dope (since the gold medal will likely be stripped away if they a...

Re: Athletics Thread (General/World)

Will Olympics prize money encourage more doping in athletics? A good question to ask especially when the lesser-developed countries and athletes are struggling to match the strides made by the advanced nations. https://athleticsillustrated.com/follow-the-money-awarding-olympic-medallists-cash-will-d...

Re: Sports and Performance Enhancing Drugs (Doping)

Two of the cross-country runners who recently competed in the World cross-country championships in Belgrade have been provisionally suspended for doping offences. Hemraj Gurjar had won two successive National cross-country titles in 2023 and 2024 before being selected for the World meet. He finished...

Re: Sports and Performance Enhancing Drugs (Doping)

More doping cases come up. Alarming trend among minors. Those responsible should be brought to book. Coaches, support personnel and parents should be held accountable and if need be, sent to jail.

Mugundan, How many years or is it months before we become number 1? Your answer arrived early Kumar! https://www.thehindu.com/sport/other-sports/sports-india-continues-to-lead-the-charts-in-dope-positive-cases/article68032353.ece Now, we will have to wait for the anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs)...

Re: Sports and Performance Enhancing Drugs (Doping)

The Chinese of late seem to have slowed down on doping. Their track and field athletes are no longer the force they were in the 1990s. Post-Ma's Army, their women track dominance has been completely shattered. They did not win a medal in last Asian Games at home in women's 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, onc...

Re: Sports and Performance Enhancing Drugs (Doping)

Kumar, it would be tough to cross Russia! Number two for India looks adequate at the moment. In the 2020 anti-doping rule violations (ADRV) report, India with 59 came second to Russia which had 135. The year 2020 was not exactly a fair yardstick to measure any country's standing since Covid-19 affec...

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...

Women's trials proved quite controversial with Vinesh Phogat being allowed to fight in two weight categories, 50kg and 53kg. Eventually, she won 50kg and finished third in 53kg. The debate was could any one be allowed to fight in two different weights as against the rules of UWW. Vinesh Phogat was s...

Actually, I thought Mugu said IOC will pay. So, what is the big deal? IOC gets its money from the Taxpayers. There have been rising concerns on tax payer money being used to fund athletes who are not medal contenders. See the saga from the Asian Games: https://old.ptinews.com/news/sports/athletes-l...

Yes, IOC pays for all qualified athletes and teams (number of team members are restricted as per the regulations of the international federations concerned). Additional support personnel will go at Govt expense or federation expe...
