Re: US Open 2013 , Flushing Meadows

So awesome that Leander Paes won the US Open Men's Doubles this year!!! I am super happy, over the moon for that! I have every expectation that he will be contending for Grand Slam crowns at 45, and the Olympics in 2016 - but he needs a decent Indian partner (emphasis on decent, in more than one sen...

Re: US Open 2013 , Flushing Meadows

So great that they runaway twins! They were rampaging. And after the first set I thought that the Bryans were again beatable. Especially the way Stepanek was serving. Next thing I see that the good guys were up 4-1 in the third, which quickly turned to 5-1. At that point I thought Paes-Stepanek were...

Re: US Open 2013 , Flushing Meadows

Thanks punarayan for your elegantly succinct assessment of Somi's game. It obviously works such that he rarely loses to players he is supposed to beat i.e. he plays to his "virtual" rank of World #70. But the lack of weapons will likely mean that the Top 10 are always out of reach. I think...

Sweet, sugar, candy man! A "W" is a "W"; unless it is preceded by George and followed by Bush, in which case y'all would call it "dubya"!

Re: WTA Tour/Non-India Fed Cup

Very unexpectedly (for me, anyway) Bartoli has announced her retirement! I suppose she didn't think she could get anywhere near topping her Wimbledon triumph again, and she was in physical pain, so she asked herself why it made sense to continue and concluded that it didn't. At first I didn't like h...

Re: Washington DC ATP 500 - 27-JUL to 04-AUG 2013

I thought Somi was in with a chance given the confluence of a number of factors in this meeting. Isner is not the same player that Somi beat back in college. But neither is Somi. College tennis is a different ball game. Likely a lot more mental and team dynamics involved there. So that match up was ...

Re: Washington DC ATP 500 - 27-JUL to 04-AUG 2013

This is a good example of why I don't like the top players getting a bye in their first round. It begs two questions (a) Why should things be easier for them in a tournament? By that token, you should not also have qualifiers. Why should it be harder for them? There was a time until the early 1920'...

Re: Washington DC ATP 500 - 27-JUL to 04-AUG 2013

I'm actually pulling for Isner to make it to play Somdev. I believe Somdev's game matches up well with Isner's. The counter punching style using Isner's power against him and tying up his long limbs with shots close to his body and at his feet can work, and has worked. So just for the next match &qu...

Re: Washington DC ATP 500 - 27-JUL to 04-AUG 2013

Somi cooks excellent DolgoPulao! Wonderful. Great. Excellent. Useful. Just a tad surprising. Some adjectives that popped into my head when I saw the news of Somi beating Dolgopolov. Very, very, very good stuff. But the work is not done yet.

Re: Leander Paes thread...

Leander has found that it Paes to have Czech mates on the tour! Leander did meander from Rikl to Damm to Dlouhy to Stepanek - as far his Czech partners are concerned. He also partnered with Siemerink, Zimonjic, Tipsarevic, Lipsky, Hanley, Johnson, Delaitre, Arthurs, Melzer, and of course, Bhupathi. ...

Re: Leander Paes thread...

So the Kastles streak is over , although I question their run being considered "The longest winning streak in major U.S. pro sports history", and them being compared to the 1971-72 LA Lakers with the legendary Karim Abdul Jabbar in it. Pretty great accomplishment at any level at any sport,...

Not a happy hunting ground for players of Indian origin today. Both Kash and Rajeev lost.

Re: ATP Hall of Fame Tennis, Newport (RI), July 8-14 2013

This tournament has indeed been a happy hunting ground for players of Indian origin historically. May it continue to be so. Great challenge for Prakash to play Hewitt who is in good nick, and especially on grass. Go Kash!

Re: US hard court Challenger Series 2013 (July-Aug)

I tend to sympathize with tennis pros who occasionally lose it on the tennis court. Key word "occasionally." Even Serena Williams when she went bonkers at that line judge at the USO. I still see that line judge officiating matches all over the world! How do I get that gig? She often calls ...
